I'm probably going to be spending a few days in Indianapolis sometime soon. Any suggestions on what part of town to stay in (for a reasonably priced hotel) and things to do/see?

Downtown Indy is pretty nice. It's small and walkable. Any hotel around the War Memorial is a good buy. You definately should check out St. Elmo's steakhouse, and try their shrimp cocktail because it's memorable. Also, there's a great little Cuban restaurant called Tata's. As far as drinking, there is a good Scottish-style pub on Maryland St? I would recommend a cab ride up to the Broad Ripple neighborhood and to drink at Brugges Brasserie. The brewer makes some very good Belgian-styles (look for Thunder Monkey).
The art museum is good. The Indy 500 museum is cool. White River State Park is good for running. If the Indians are playing baseball when you're there, go check it out because it's one of the nicest AAA ballparks and a cheap diversion.

Come on, that's Monty. No matter what he changes his name to, it should be immediately obvious who he is.

(I've never been to Indianapolis.)

massachusetts avenue is the upscale artsy area. pricey eats there. it's downtown.

broad ripple village is the bohemian area. ethnic food, tattoo joints, train kids, etc. it's northeast of downtown.

fountain square is the punk rock, grungy, vintage area. radio radio is there and a really cool 24 hr greasy spoon.

good restaurants to try:
yats - local cajun restaurant, there are a few scattered throughout the city
brugge - belgian brewpub in broad ripple. get the bucket o' mussels with a triple de ripple
broad ripple brewpub - gastro pub in broad ripple connected to a good brewery.
upland brewery - local brewery with a storefront in the broad ripple area. growlers and flights available. kid and pet friendly

cabs can take you anywhere

Thanks for the info. Looks like it should be easy to find something to do.
