a friend of mine recommended this to me recently, and then I went out and read a completely different book called Cloud Atlas. So I need at least 6 months before reading the other one.

Heard an interview with him last week and he's really happy with how it's going...and also really proud that his daughter is on SNL

(interview should be up HERE soon but I don't see it yet)

he should stick with being proud of eagleheart

his daughter apparently only inherited her mama's hawt, because she didn't really get much of her daddy's funny

Yeah, Eagleheart has been pretty great so far, although I'm only 2 eps in. He was on the Best Show on WFMU a few weeks ago and it was interesting to hear him talk about the Letterman years (Bob, you might wanna give it a listen). The discussion turned to Daddy's Boy, so I got in on amazon for a dime.

The book's really funny so far. It's essentially Elliott describing this completely fabricated and outlandish upbringing with a "famous parent" (who he so far has ONLY referred to as "Daddy"). Then, his dad writes "rebuttals" for every chapter where he's writing stuff like "I have no idea what he's talking about. Is he making this up? Where is this coming from?" I'm only on the 2nd chapter now but it's made me laugh.

there ya go! It's a 3 hour show, so you may have to skip around a bit to find the interview.

it's also a podcast if that helps.

I've gotten so lazy about reading for the last couple years, it's just about restricted to when I'm on a plane. With that preface, I've been on this one for a couple months now. In fact, left the first copy of it on a damned plane and had to order another one.

Originally published sequentially in the early 90's as a trilogy, Matthiessen was never satisified with having been talked into making his original 1500+ page draft into three books. He spent several many more years editing the original manuscript, and, in fact rewriting what had been the second book, Lost Man's River, eventually ending up with around 850+ pages of integrated story. I read the trilogy as it came out, and thoroughly enjoyed it (as I have everything else he's ever written), but as I get close to finishing the newly combined single volume, it only creates more admiration for his gifts.

This is a BIG story, based in fact, about E. J. Watson, a notorious character who lived on the southwest Florida coast in the late 1800's- early 1900's - a successful sugar cane planter, a fast gun desperado, a terrible father, a compassionate father, friend, and neighbor, a mercilous killer- take your pick. The story uses Watson's youngest son's years-long quest to investigate, first-hand, his father's life, and, in so doing, remove the stains of rumor and folk myth that followed the elder Watson throughout his life, and beyond his death ( lynched by his neighbors for murders he may or may not have committed).

Shadow Country inadvertently turned into a 20 year project for Matthiesson, and worth every minute.

I'm about 200 pages into the Keith Richards's autobiography. Can't say I particularly enjoy it. I'm forcing myself to keep reading it, hoping it becomes a little more interesting.

I've read parts of this for school. Great, but my attention span has never allowed me to read the whole thing.

I plowed through the lbj trilogy a few years ago. I've been told this is even better. If it's well written, I ain't skeered.

It's excellent. It was assigned so I only read what I had to. I always told myself I'd come back and read it properly one day but never have.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Mr Postman delivered it this morning. I may use it for a weight lifting program when finished.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have the same dirty feeling after I finish this as when I finished the last one.

Ryu Murakami: Piercing

Not the other more well known Haruki Murakami, Ryu Murakami is a bit more disturbing. For example this book opens with the main character going through his nightly ritual....of standing over the baby's crib and telling himself over and over...I will not stab the baby with this ice pick, I will not stab the baby with this ice pick... I think I am likely to go through of few of this fellow's books.
