No, his voice is awesome when its on. It's always the songwriting never living up to Trace for me.

Son Volt has all the ingredients I like, but I could never connect with them.

Is it Farrar's voice? I could see that being a deal breaker.

I can play the albums and appreciate them, but overall Son Volt just lacks that extra bit to make me ever want to revisit. It's how I feel about Built to Spill as well.

That's how I feel about BTS as well. At least other than the having any of the ingredients or the appreciating them parts. Love Son Volt though.

I really like this a lot. Maybe even more than the last two SV records (both of which I've been a big fan of). There's a bit of an edge that the last two have smoothed out (especially in the guitars, which sound really nice).

I should probably also mention that billy g and rp74 have been selling me on this record for years: You were right, guys. Good shit.

The thing about Okemah is it actually sounds like a Son Volt record where the last 2 albums sort of retreated back into more of a Jay Farrar solo sound.

I've never had an issue with Jay's mournful baritone. If anything, it draws me in more to what he has to say. It's all about preference I guess. Conversely, I can see how some folks would be turned off by it. Same prolly goes for Dylan, Richard Buckner, John Prince, and a slew of others....

I've always loved his voice. Hard to hear any other singing some of those lines.
