i like solid songwriting, unique devices presenting said solid songwriting, good performances on record and live, and melody. if that happens to fall in with a particular genre from time-to-time, cool!

but relying on a standard sound/presentation gets old real quick, regardless of the genre. i don't think "indie rock" is terribly unique in this regard.

Indie rock as a genre term = Just as often generic as any other genre
