well, this is where i draw the line with them, but there is still half a good album in here:

Image

actually have edited down to 9 songs on my ipod:

Desire
Hawkmoon269
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
Angel Of Harlem
Love Rescue Me
When Love Comes To Town
Heartland
God Part II
All I Want Is You

surprised how much i could finally once again enjoy Desire, Angel of Harlem and When Love Comes To Town as i didn't think i cared to ever hear them again.

Love Rescue Me, Heartland and All I Want Is You will always have their righteous place among great U2 songs for me.

i can't even for the life of me think of what else i cut out from this album outside of the godawful Helter Skelter and Silver and Gold live track.

Forgotten Rebels - Surfin' On Heroin
Highly melodic, completely sociopathic punk rock. "Bomb the Boats (Feed the Fish)" is as offensive a screed about unwanted refugees as it is funny, and the title track is an undeniable classic.[/quote]

One of my favourite bands of all time. Bit of a greatest hits album with some hideously offensive new songs as well.

Easily the best Stones album since Black and Blue or, depending on your disposition, Some Girls.

young white boy's intro to west coast rap. i don't remember a silly 90s hs keg party when this didn't get thrown on

when i thought mark arm could do no wrong had to backtrack his catalog. nothing pretty but true seminal grunge

buddy hooked me up w/ this tape around the anodyne era, but a few great covers (black flag's gimmex3 & ccr's fortunate son) and early yet memorable no depression cuts

Okay, so, maybe you don't want to hear this. And, to be honest, this is a very amateurish, occasionally painful listen.
Originally sold at SB shows as homemade cassettes, there's lots of off-key singing, very loose performances, and just straight-out weirdness. But, fact remains that these are the first recordings that Sam Prekop and Eric Claridge (The Sea and Cake) ever made together, or at least the first ones that they ever released. So, if you are a fan at all of the whole Chicago post-rock Drag City scene, this is the seed of it all and something that you should at least check out once.
As a hardcore Shrimp Boat fan, I own this pretty much for completest purposes, only. I rarely listen to it. But I do sometimes enjoy it.

I always liked "Van Dieman's Land" and for me, the live version of "Pride (In the Name of Love" on there is infinitely better than the studio version. "Love Rescue Me" is still so damn good.

After not receiving much attention on a couple early releases she put this out that year and it put her on the map. At least critically and gained her recognition as a songwriter. Several songs on this were recorded by other artists which allowed her to keep making music.

She was kind of in that no man's land of not having the great voice or looks of the Nashville pop queens and wasn't down home country enough to be Outlaw. Still, if you're a fan of americana-esque music and great songwriting, you should hear this. Sometimes I think it's her best. Great mix of country, blues, rock, and folk.

If she had only put out this and "Sweet Old World" she would've been considered an overlooked, underappreciated, talented artist deserving of more attention. As it is, she continued to make great albums and she's just merely a national treasure. At least the way I see it.

"Punk Rock Girl", "My Many Smells", "Smokin' Banana Peels", "Everybody's Got Nice Stuff But Me"; just a few of the classics on. This is a record that is just as catchy as it is funny. And it is very funny.

It did suck, but then Achtung Baby was their best record, IMO.
And then, they stopped making anything that I ever wanted to hear.

Guess I'm in the minority on Rattle and Hum. Like estone, I think it hits more than it misses.

Then again, I find their work up to Joshua Tree hit or miss as well.

I mean, even "Angel of Harlem" has the Memphis fucking Horns on it.

Whatevs.

Good call, and I'd say it's definitely her best. Car Wheels got all the attention, but that's just because it was an entry point for a bunch of tone-deaf critics who'd only just discovered her. Since that one, though, she has managed about one or two good songs per album among mountains of dreck and some of the worst lyrics known to mankind.

Dreams So Real Rough Night In Jericho
One of the Athens bands that appeared in the wake of REM, their sound was similar in some ways although with a harder rock edge. The album is full of that big echo-y production that anchors it to the '80s, but songs like "Bearing Witness" are so razor-sharp and hook-filled that you probably won't care.

Image

Art Bergmann - Crawl With Me
Post K-Tels/Young Canadians, Post Poisoned, Post Los Popularos, and already one album into what was expected to become a glorious solo career, Bergmann enlisted ex-VU demigod John Cale as producer for his sophomore release. The problem was that Cale at that point was a rock-hating drunk who insisted that Bergmann's songs didn't need so much guitar aggression. WRONG. Cale attempted to completely neuter Bergmann with saccharine mainstream keyboards, and yet, even then, Bergmann's voice managed to cut through the shit. It might have been because songs like "Our Little Secret" (about child molestation) and "The Junkie Don't Care" were just impermeable to any kind of makeover, or maybe Cale's clueless sheen added a layer of sanitized irony to the whole sordid project, but the album is far stranger than anything else in Bergmann's catalogue.

Eleventh Dream Day - Prairie School Freakout
One of the first of the alternative/college rock bands that took Neil Young exclusively as their base template, but it's Zuma Neil not Harvest Neil, meaning lots of wiry solos and sloppy fuzz surrounding a keening, whining vocalist. Some prefer Beet as Eleventh Dream Day's highwater mark, but for me this was as good as they got.

John Hiatt - Slow Turning
My personal fave John Hiatt album. As direct and heartfelt as Hiatt would ever get, still rough around the edges, but with a clutch of songs ("Drive South", "Tennessee Plates", "Slow Turning", "Feels Like Rain", "Georgia Rae") that should've reserved a permanent spot for Hiatt in the big leagues.

Image

Zodiac Mindwarp & the Love Reaction - Tattooed Beat Messiah
Amongst all the hair farming of the late 80s these guys appeared to show all the posers how it's done. Of course, this was all a pose itself - the absolutely hilarious ultra-macho lyrics tip the hat - but it works because the band rocks so unrelentingly hard. "Prime Mover" is the one song you NEED to hear, but the whole album holds up surprisingly well.

Stuart

Quote:
You know what, Stuart, I LIKE YOU. You're not like the other
people, here, in the trailer park.

Oh, don't go get me wrong. They're fine people, they're
good Americans. But they're content to sit back, maybe
watch a little Mork and Mindy on channel 57, maybe kick
back a cool, Coors 16-ouncer. They're good, fine people,
Stuart. But they don't know ... what the queers are doing
to the soil!

You know that Jonny Wurster kid, the kid that delivers papers
in the neighborhood. He's a foreign kid. Some of the neighbors
say he smokes crack, but I don't believe it.

Anyway, for his tenth birthday, all he wanted was a Burrow Owl.
Kept bugging his old man. "Dad, get me a burrow owl. I'll never
ask for anything else as long as I live." So the guy
breaks down and buys him a burrow owl.

Anyway, 10:30, the other night, I go out in my yard, and there's
the Wurster kid, looking up in the tree. I say, "What are
you looking for?" He says "I'm looking for my burrow owl."
I say, "Jumping Jesus on a Pogo Stick. Everybody knows
the burrow owl lives. In a hole. In the ground. Why the hell do you
think they call it a burrow owl, anyway?" Now Stuart, do you
think a kid like that is going to know what the queers are
doing to the soil?

I first became aware of this about ten years ago, the summer
my oldest boy, Bill Jr. died. You know that carnival comes into
town every year? Well this year they came through with a ride
called The Mixer. The man said, "Keep your head, and arms, inside
the Mixer at all times." But Bill Jr, he was a DAAAREDEVIL, just
like his old man. He was leaning out saying "Hey everybody,
Look at me! Look at me!" Pow! He was decapitated! They found
his head over by the snow cone concession.

A few days after that, I open up the mail. And there's a pamphlet
in there. From Pueblo, Colorado, and it's addressed to Bill, Jr.
And it's entitled, "Do you know what the queers are doing to our
soil?"

Now, Stuart, if you look at the soil around any large US city,
there's a big undeground homosexual population. Des Moines, Iowa,
for an example. Look at the soil around Des Moines, Stuart.
You can't build on it; you can't grow anything in it. The government
says it's due to poor farming. But I know what's really going on,
Stuart. I know it's the queers. They're in it with the aliens.
They're building landing strips for gay Martians, I swear to
God.

You know what, Stuart, I like you. You're not like the other
people, here in this trailer park.

We really should build an index to these threads and sticky it.

I've never heard that Nick Lowe or Steve Forbert. I probably should.

Some more I like:

David Rudder (& Charlie's Roots) - Haiti

Really good calypso

Let's Active - Every Dog Has Its Day

Their last album. It's produced by John Leckie and is a much harder power pop sound than their previous lite jangle pop stuff. IMO, its their best album.

Here's a video:

The Bible - Eureka

UK Wuss Pop surprisingly produced by Steve Earle. It's pretty good for what it is.

Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man

Not sure this needs any explanation.

Decent Power Pop. I prefer Hup to it but I liked it plenty back in the day.

Israel Vibration - Strength of My Life

Probably my favorite reggae album from 1988

Not my link:

Code:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AWSBKTY1

Guy Clark - Old Friends
Rodney Crowell - Diamonds & Dirt

Not my favorite GC/RC albums but they can do little wrong in my book.

Mighty Lemon Drops - World Without End

Decent indie guitar rock. Gotta alot of play from me that year.

Not my link:

Code:
http://rapidshare.com/files/29290756/Mighty_Lemon_Drops_-_World_Without_End.zip.html

This one also got a ton of play from me. I can't say I listen to him much anymore but if I were to, this is the one I'd grab.
