Anybody remember this great tune?

I'm always late to these threads.

Conrad Schnitzler and Gen Ken Montgomery-New Dramatic Electronic Music

I love Schnitzler and appreciate greatly everything he has done for advancing experimental music over the last forty years or so. Is this his best project, absolutely not, however I like how much electronics really come up front here as opposed to the bizarre full blown orchestra pieces he has done, or even some of the Tangerine Dream stuff. I think there is a lot in this record that fans of No-Wave Black Dice and NNCK would really like.

Masonna-maso+onna

This was a great time for Japanoise in general, and Masonna I think put out four or five records this year, none of which are bad, but this is my favorite. What you get here is pretty standard tape-era Masonna, the two huge differences are the unprocessed vocal barks and yelps of Maso on side two that really show how ridiculously hard the vocals are even clean, and an unprecedented guitar solo somewhere around 19 minutes in that has a bit of Boredoms foreshadowing to it. Masonna are fucking great on every release in my opinion, but if you don't like noise you will hate them and probably shouldn't even be reading this.

Hijokaidan-No Paris No Harm

:rawk: :rawk: :rawk: Great early noise all over this one. Arguably the best screams ever...pretty sure about 90% of Prurient's creative output can be traced to this record. Essential record in any noise catalog.

Jandek-On the Way

Far from my favorite Jandek album, maybe not even one that I like all the time to be honest, but I think it is pretty accessible which is why I am posting it. There is a heavy blues influence here, pretty standard tuning, and pretty conventional song structure. Don't get me wrong, you still get some of the odd textural scrapings and Jandek guitar (which is what it is) thrown in, but it is really a pop record of sorts. If you ahve been interested in Jandek and usually don't listen to a lot of far-left music this is a pretty good entry point. Then move onto If you Walk Alone and then wind up with Chair Beside a Window.

Merzbow-I'm Proud by Rank of the Workers: Live in Khabarovsk CCCP

First, that album cover is one of my favorites of all time. I used to have a shirt that I ironed it onto. I wonder what ever happened to that shirt. But yeah, the music, it's Merzbow so you think you are going to get this :rawk: , but not here. Easily the weirdest LP Merzbow ever released. The band was told that they were too loud to use their electronic equipment after the first night, so this recording of the second night features all improv acoustic guitars and other wood and stringed instruments, as well as some killer drumming. Never did Merzbow sound quite like this, this is unbelievable free jazz that bridges the gap between so many influences that went into the general beautiful mess that Merzbow created. This is another one that I would call essential not just for noise fans but also for fans of Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra, etc. Killer record all the way through.

Or if you think there should be more rap or whatever in this thread, maybe you should post some (more).

For whatever reason, I feel more inclined to check out hip-hop stuff from this era than from other times. I'm kinda curious about that Krown Rulers album. I'd never heard of it before this thread, and I've seen almost nothing about them anywhere.

So Ced Gee was involved in it?

Front 242 - Front By Front

Probably my favorite full-length by my favorite industrial band. I always liked the heavy beat they used, and still listen to this and Official Version from time to time.

Love this record.

Man, I love Front 242

I think this is the first time Obner has mentioned any industrial album, ever.

Quote:
DJ Royal Rocker and MC Grand Poobah (not Grand Puba of Brand Nubian fame) hail from Camden, NJ (not Philadelphia, as their Tuff Crew affiliation might suggest) and are collectively known as the Krown Rulers. Paper Chase sounds very much like a record from the ’88 era: the drums are loud enough to wake up the dead and mixed way the fuck up in front, at times coming dangerously close to drowning out the other sounds. The main difference between Krown Rulers and the numerous underground crews of the era might very well be their respectably rigid adherence to a high standard of quality control in all aspects of their music.

Grand Poobah boasts an authoritative if slightly nasal voice, an impeccable sense of rhythm and enviable breath control. His rhymes are very carefully enunciated and match the precision of Royal Rocker’s swift cuts and scratches. At his best, Poobah complements and adds something special to the album’s catchy combination of looped breaks and programmed drums provided by the Tuff Crew and Ced Gee.

In spite of their highly technical approach, the Krown Rulers manage to infuse plenty of personality into their music. The anti-skeezer anthem “That’s Not Where It’s At” and the rousing “Let The Party Rock,” for example, are just as hilarious as similarly clownish songs by Cash Money and Marvelous from the same era. Even in moments of levity, the duo maintain a high skill level and Poobah doesn’t let down his guard for too long. The duo sounds best, however, where the song is not attached to an explicit concept and instead showcases Poobah’s literate rhyming.

Just about every song reflects the era’s unmistakably energetic vibe: the hooks on songs like the two mixes of the invigorating “Kick the Ball” and the twice-covered (by High and & Mighty and friends) monster jam “B-Boy Document” are designed to move the crowd. Although this sound may seem dated to nubile ears, Paper Chase’s nearly myopic emphasis on competitive in-your-face showmanship is warmly welcomed in today’s era of glammed-up detachment. Peep the title track and “32nd Street” for some flawless ’88 rap.

The first non-local bands show I ever went to was Front 242 with Frontline Assembly opening. Good times.
