I'll have to have a look around. Not sure exactly what is available and not at any given time. But, do plan on grabbing something on the way home today, so I'll see if I can grab something suggested here.

This weekend I'm heading to the East Nashville Beer Festival

http://eastnashvillebeerfest.com/breweries.php

They limited the ticket sales to 2,000, so hopefully I'll get to try everything I want and will need to take a cab back home.

Nice. Let me know what you think of Wild Heaven. They just started operating out of Decatur last year I think. I've yet to have any of their stuff but it's getting a ton of local love. I think they only have 2-3 beers so far.

Started by one of the founding publishers of Paste magazine.

Haven't tried a ton of Belgian beers, but had this on Friday night before dinner:
Image

I enjoyed the one I had but I don't think it'd be something I'd have more than one or two more in one sitting (obviously its not meant for binge drinking or anything). Might be worth exploring a bit further.

all i've ever seen is the Orchard which for some reason i don't want to try. but this intrigued me coupled with some positive reviews here i believe (kyle?)

part of the new Crooked Line series from Uinta Brewing out of SLC. can't say i've ever tried Uinta, but these both had pretty good ratings from Beer Advocate + i needed a bit of dark beer for the Beef Carbonnade i'm making tomorrow. a little overkill maybe, but better than finishing half a bottle of guiness i guess.

I usually like stuff by The Bruery because it's a little different. The 3 or 4 I've had were all kinda refreshing, and didn't taste like everyone else's belgian-inspired offerings. Also I love the labels, and that shit really does influence your opinion.

That second Crooked Line beer pictured I recall being fucking awesome. I'd never heard of them, and did a double take after a sip. "Well who's THIS now?"

Having a Duck Rabbit Porter - which reminds me how much I love a good porter. I used to drink Bert's(?) Perfect Porters a lot in Athens.

This thing is very nice, with a an after taste or mouth full feel of something akin to burnt bread - which is surprisingly pleasant. Like slightly burnt toast.

had one of these tonight. Tasted fine, but not all that much better than say, Flying Dog Tire Bite Golden Ale.

I tried 2 or 3 of theirs and found them all kinda boring.

Beer night at Squirrgle's

ImageImage

Shiv came by and we swapped beers - some I brought back from Chicago, a Kentucky Breakfast Stout, and he brought me some really good shit I haven't had yet. Splitting a high-caliber 12 oz is a good way to taste a beer... you get enough to really know how it tastes, but you don't get fucked up after 2 of them.

Oh...tried to check out a couple of the beers suggested but the onyl ones they had where I stopped were individual bottles and I wasn't needing that last night, so went with a 6 of McSorley's Irish Black Lager, which has been hitting the spot lately. This one and the Fuller's London Porter have been a couple I've been going back to these days.

But I do plan on grabbing a few single bottle soon-ish to give a few of the suggestions a try.

ok - this is fucking awesome. would sit nicely next to my favorites in this style -- Espresso Oak Aged Yeti and Ten Fiddy. pours thick like molasses. sweet, chocolatey...but not too boozy. and 13.2%? shit...i'm glad i poured 8 oz of this into the slow cooker with the Carbonnade this morning. this is a 22 to share as a night cap or after a nice meal. i'll be grabbing another bottle of this tomorrow and storing for next winter. maybe.

Killed some time before my haircut tonight at the Scottish Bar, and tried Skull Splitter (what a name) for the first time. Supposedly based on a 5000 year old recipe, it poured a bit of an odd color but once I tasted it I was hooked. 8.5% abv, really smooth, and a new favorite beer contender.

Had this once and also liked it.

It isn't beer, but just had my first sip of this and it sure is nice.

Image

EDIT: Finished first glass of this and am loving it. A lot of fruit happening surprisingly, still full oak and vanilla taste though, and really easy to drink. Most importantly, the last drink tasted just as good as the first drink. I will see if that trend continues on to the second glass now.

I went to a Nebraska Brewing Company tapping party last night for the grand re-opening of my favorite brew pub. I consumed:
Black Betty Imperial Russian Stout:
http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/nebraska-b ... ut/106087/
Nogne O Imperial Brown Ale:
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/7730/35619
Nebraska Brewing Company Samerican Brown Ale
Summit Maibock:
http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/summit-maibock/9940/
A bottle of 2010 Founders KBS, which was delicious but not quite as formidable as Goose Island Bourbon County Rare. The heat from the bourbon is much more evident in this beer, but the roasted malt flavor is a bit overpowering. It is still a top notch beer in my book, but the aged 2009 Goose Island I consumed earlier this year still remains the King.

Dead-on. Standard 2010 KBS versus Standard 2009 GI Burb Co: the goose island wins. Both are excellent, but the KBS is too sweet for me.

Had a few of these in Charlotte the other night- OMB (Olde Mecklenberg Brewery) Copper Ale (on tap). I could have knocked them back all night. Damned fine beer.

Recents

Maredsous - Abbaye
Image
Marriedsauce. A good belgian blonde, more tart than usual. Exactly what you expect, but slightly less sweet and a little closer to lemon-already-squeezed-into-it tasting. B+

Firestone - Walker's Reserve Porter
Image
First porter I've been Meh'd by in a while. It was just ... boring. B-

Lagunitas - The Hairy Eyeball
Image
9% eh? Well allllllright. It's red-coppery as you can see, and it doesn't have any particular strong flavor of any sort... it's kind of a wierd beer in that respect. They jacked it up to 9%, but didn't really make a statement of any kind. It's not very hoppy or malty, there's no additional trickery, just a deceptively smooth fuck-em-up red ale. B

Short's Brew - Hangin' hank
Image
This is less hoppy than most of its peers, but still has a respectable bite to it. The malt is different than most others - it tastes like rye to me. It's a little spicey in that way, like something other than just barley or wheat was used, maybe. I dig it. It's hard to do much unique with an IPA these days, seems like... everything's been done, and done well by somebody. So kudos for making an IPA that's identifiable and yet tasty. B+

Berkshire Brewing Company - Shabadoo Black & Tan

ImageImage
So I took the one on the left completely innocently, this is where I was sitting when I had the beer Sunday. And as I was lining it up on the little camera screen, I sorta realized that most of the people in this thread would probably prefer that I, uh, ... re-focus and take a second shot as well. Enjoy. Anyway, the beer. It's a style I always forget about, but drinking this one made me remember the appeal... some dark porter malt roast, with a good hoppy / clear / bright pale ale presence. Also this particular brewery is in a good spot right now, consistantly out-punting its price range. I think this bottle was like $5. B+

Weyerbacher - Verboten Belgian Pale
Image
Had one of these last night, and I was pleasantly surprised. Weyerbacher can be REALLY hit or miss, but this was great. It was smooth and pleasant, nicely belgian in all the right ways, but still a teeny bit hoppier than usual. Good on 'em. B+

Victory - Headwaters Pale Ale
Image
So if you find yourself liking the big new american IPA's, but wishing they were like 60% as hoppy, this is your beer. All the big malt presence, and a wonderful rush of late green hops, but in a more reasonable volume than in most of the big IPA's out now. This is a wonderful beer for what it is - sixpackable, hell even case-able, capable of being guzzled by the gallon lakeside in July. A-

1809 - Berliner Weisse
Image
Some professor brewed this in germany, using an old recipe from 1809. Had it with BBQ. Found it to be very interesting and unique, like a regular weisse but much more tart! It's FULL of yeast, like there was a quarter-sized glop of it in the bottom of the glass. And it mentions that they use lactic acid producing bacteria somehow... ? But you can taste it, it's like lemon juice. I liked it well enough but I do prefer a lot of others over it and probably won't buy it again. B

OMB is a newish brewery in Charlotte - maybe 2 years old. Of the beers of theirs, I definitely enjoy Copper the most. I still need to check out their tap room.

Also, the wife, kid and I will be going to Belgium for 2 weeks late aug / early september. Biking between Amsterdam and Brugge, taking a train back to A'Dam, then flying back home. I have already found a good beer map of the country, but I'd love any suggestions for what might be doable between the 2 cities, and what not to miss. Anyone been? Toze?

WOW - this brewery's site just nails it - everything you want to see in a website.

Derris - is Hop City the place you get your beers? I wouldn't mind picking up a few Growlers. Possibly the coolest beer vessel on the planet

Gar, yes, that's my spot. Website is kind of fail but their weekly email they send out is great. Highlights new and upcoming offerings as well as upcoming beer events and does the same for their wine side as well.

I got the one today talking about the Growlers being available this Thursday. To my knowledge, I don't think anyone else offers Growlers here in town. Unless the Brickstore Pub does which I don't think they do.

Still, awesome news. Atlanta being dragged kicking and screaming into the modern world of beer practices.
