And then you and a GQ blurb got me to give it a real listen. There are 4 good to great songs, and 6 KWIsbell songs, but it is what it is. He should come out of this period with a heckuva JJCale or Kristoferson or Shaver or Jerry Jeff esque Greatest Hits written by a dude the general public is largely oblivious to album. I can't believe someone like Jimmy Buffett or even Tim McGraw hasn't trotted out a gussied up Dress Blues. You know, Fer The Troops!

Yeah, he's got that thing where even if he's doing a sort of down-the-middle-tune, there's something that's just a little bit off or out there or whatever. Like "Codeine" could be a hit for any number of people from McGraw & Faith to Kid Rock & Sheryl Crow, but the lyrics are just fucked up enough that Walton J Mart might drive his F350 dualie into traffic if he thought about it too dang hard. And then how would Becky and Junior and Little Hannah eat?

I think that's just who he is but it probably doesn't hel (or hurt depending your perspective) that he spent time hanging around with Patterson, a guy who pretty much embraces career sabotage as an ongoing goal.

I've only got 4 worth mentioning.

01 - Destroyer - Kaputt
02 - Craft Spells - Idle Labor
03 - The Phoenix Foundation - Buffalo
04 - Bill Callahan - Apocalypse

I've only heard 10 albums from 2011, with maybe another 5 or so kicking about that I haven't had time to listen to yet.

So far

1. P J Harvey
2. King Creosote & Jon Hopkins

are the only ones I really like

3. Kurt Vile
4. Wanda Jackson

are decent enough

the rest haven't impressed.

OK, add Black Joe Lewis in at 3. Mountain Goats was merely OK but maybe it's a grower, I've only heard it once.

Interesting that you like Braids. You don't like Animal Collective, do you?

Not really, I've tried listening to them a few times but I just don't connect. I just heard Braids on CBC3 awhile ago, dug up the album and liked it. I did notice that there does seem to be comparisons to AC and some band named Gang Gang Dance that I've never heard of.

Musically they are pretty similar to recent Animal Collective, but the vocals are pretty different, obviously. I think the Gang Gang Dance comparison comes from the vocals more than the music, but they're kind of in a similar vein.

I've seen Braids derided as lesser followers of Animal Collective, but I do think they have their own thing going on, most of which comes from the singer.

I've never heard of these guys, am kind of interested now though.

Also, I need to listen to that new Callahan. I really like some of Smog, but some of it I just can't get behind, too wordy or something, I am not sure what it is. Always willing to give anything from this guy, Molina, or Oldham a try though.

I'd say this new one is definitely a good Callahan album to get back on board with. It might be my favorite of the three he's put out so far under his own name.

Good call. I listened to this and that new Cass McCombs a few times this past weekend and really like both.

I like the new Kills and it's top 5 material for me. Haven't listened to Oh Mercy, Skybombers, or The Booze yet.

after a weekend of rain, jays, taxes, and deliberation, the top 5 is shaken up:

1. Timber Timbre "Creep On Creepin' On"
2. Gang Gang Dance "Eye Contact"
3. Panda Bear "Tomboy"
4. Cass Mccombs "Wit's End"
5. Ponytail "Do Whatever You Want All The Time"

Gone is James Blake from the top slot, group even. Also on the cusp are Six Organs, Shilpa Ray, Nicolas Jaar, Fleet Foxes, Bill Callahan.

if that phoenix foundation album turns out to actually have been an 2010 release, as some are saying, then...

1. hayes carll - KMAG YOYO
2. middle brother - middle brother
3. raphael saadiq - stone rollin'
4. the insomniacs - just enjoy it
5. apex manor - the year of magical drinking

need to call an audible, as mid bro has rocketed to the top spot on my list with ferocious intensity

haven't even heard Royal Bangs. Should I? A friend of mine manages them. I usually don't listen to stuff my friends are involved with (weird, huh?)
