Curious whether anyone here is familiar with him. From what I've gathered online, he's a Canuck and used to play in a Canadian punk band (probably not a very good one) but he's gone solo and is now playing folk/country type stuff

The No Depression Review posted today for his new album caught my eye:

Daniel Romano - Sleep Beneath the Willow

NoDepression Wrote:
Lee Hazlewood or Gram Parsons? A little of each, with a hint of Johnny Cash’s gravitas thrown in for good measure. On the opening number Daniel Romano sings in the deadpan style of Hazlewood, but by track two he embraces the sweet and sad melancholy of Parsons. There are low twanging guitars and period touches to suggest the former’s Phoenix years, but also slow waltzes and country-rockers that evoke the latter. At times the two combine as Romano reaches down from his middle range to darker notes at the bottom end. The ghost of Gram Parsons is inescapable, but it floats through a lot of musical variety. There are gospel harmonies, a Celtic fiddle melody and subtle organ backing for “Louise,” and the broken-hearted “Lost (For as Long as I Live),” is waltzed along by acoustic guitar strums and fiddle. The lonely “I Won’t Let It” suggests a downcast, morning-after ‘50s country ballad, and the dark lyric “there are lines in my face that don’t come from smiling” is matched by the song’s emotionally spent vocal tone. There are countrypolitan touches in the harmony backings of Misha Bower, Tamara Lindeman and Lisa Bozikovic, and several of the songs, particularly the fiddle-led “Paul and Jon,” sound as if they could have been collected by A.P. Carter. This is a fascinating record with roots both familiar and obscure.

I went to his myspace page and was surprised to find the Hazlewood (first song) and GP (second song) comparisons actually seem somewhat fitting. I'm intrigued now. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a full free download and the CDs I found are a little pricey since he's a little known Canuck presumably without very good distribution. I'll probably eventually break down and buy it but was curious if anyone knew any more about him than I know.

I'm seriously impressed with this. #1 with a bullet. I haven't been this excited by an album I wasn't anticipating since Joe Pisapia's Daydreams and this might be the better of the two. The first three songs are amazing, then there's a little dip then it picks right back up again. Album of the year so far easily. Maybe album of the decade. The worst thing I can say about it is that its going to take me out of my comfort curmudgeon zone and I'm probably going to end up listening to a lot more crap as a result of fearing missing another album like this one. Holy moly though if that review sounds good to you, download it immediately.

Past decade, or this new decade? I guess if it's that good, that's not really a relevant question. DLing.

First song reminds me of nothing so much as Luke Doucet (which is not a bad thing).
Digging into this now. Thanks for the heads-up!

I got into Daniel Romano awhile ago due to his association with Shotgun Jimmie. Good stuff.

I only had time for the first three songs on the train ride into SF this a.m.
My initial thoughts - Gram's songs & vocal stylings are a major influence here, especially on that opening track. His backing band - a subtle nod to Elvis Presley's early seventies group (The TCB Band with b/vox done by the The Sweet Inspirations) who Gram borrowed for his early solo recordings are present here as well. Too early to really comment on the songs.

I like it.

I've listened to the first 3 songs and they are indeed awesome. Vocals sound something like a cross between Jim Ford and Gram Parsons with an occasional Willie Nelson vibe. You can hear the Gram Parsons influence but it's not derivative. The way he sets up the female back-up vocals are reminiscent of the John Cash with June Carter. If it holds up, easily the best thing I've heard in Cuntry music in a long time.

I guess I need to check out Luke Doucet's solo material. I like the two Veal albums I have enough but just never got around to hearing his solo stuff. The first song really sounds like a lost Lee Hazlewood song to me though.

Tell me about Shotgun Jimmie. I know nothing but that they are the same label. And don't hold out on me when you know of guys like Daniel Romano.

I meant this short decade but probably would have been ok with either interpretation. I had to stop myself from saying it was the best album in the last 20+ years because that's pretty absurd to say based on 4-5 listens but I'm not sure yet that it's not true. I really like it that much.

Is this the Drive By Truckers record you guys have been waiting for that finally materialized?

There have to be at least 300 albums from three decades prior that sound exactly like this, with the same music, the same content.

But THIS is different. A niche that has been stagnant with yearly participants since 1985 and now a super-boring carbon copy has some mystical hype from a land far away and street teamers intact.

The laxative for rotting garage rock constipation.
