I've said this before but it bears repeating: If there was anything out there that actually disqualified Barry from being President, the Clinton Brothers would have used it before the end of 2007; everything else is just the desperate babble of the Dumbg.

I listened to On Point this morning on NPR that was talking about her

and Tom Ashbrook and Anne C. Heller, journalist and author of “Ayn Rand and the World She Made.” make the point that Rand was stuck in a perpetual adolescence. My immediate thought was "just like all of her Tea Party/Libertarian followers" (ok, now I'm just baiting billyg, ShamWow! and Stone.)

You know I've never actually read Ayn Rand, but I feel like I've got a pretty good handle on her "philosophy". Anyway, if you're a libertarian type and that's the line of thinking you subscribe to, then fine. I don't necessarily think it's dumb or immature. I just totally disagree with it.

The irony is any Christian championing Ayn Rand. Her ideology is almost diametrically opposite of core Christian teachings, and she has a lot more in common with, say, Anton LaVey (who cited her as a big influence) than anything in the New Testament. And she said herself that she thought religions were "evil", not because they're hypocritical, because violence is committed in their names, etc., but because they helped poor people.

More about Rand:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/ ... story.html

Quote:
None of the characters expresses a hint of sympathetic human emotion — which is precisely the point. Rand’s novels are vehicles for a system of thought known as Objectivism. Rand developed this philosophy at the length of Tolstoy, with the intellectual pretensions of Hegel, but it can be summarized on a napkin. Reason is everything. Religion is a fraud. Selfishness is a virtue. Altruism is a crime against human excellence. Self-sacrifice is weakness. Weakness is contemptible. “The Objectivist ethics, in essence,” said Rand, “hold that man exists for his own sake, that the pursuit of his own happiness is his highest moral purpose, that he must not sacrifice himself to others, nor sacrifice others to himself.”

Good Lord. I think a lot of people focus on delegitimizing the president because the idea that a "black" man is in the white house is too abhorrent to them to think could happen fairly. It's a really enlightening and frightening display. Donald Trump's jumping on the bandwagon on this is pretty sickening, though not necessarily unexpected from a narcissist windbag like him. It's becoming harder to even participate, or be exposed to, what accounts for politics in America.

I've found that my interest in local politics has grown more and more with each year. Not sure if that's me getting older or from watching public discourse just get worse and worse with each election cycle.

For me, to follow things on a macro level is a losing proposition and will drive you crazy. If you really want to exact change and have an impact, following things locally is the way to go. Even in a huge city like Atlanta, I've found even following things in the individual communities more interesting/rewarding. At the very least you can find organizations and initiatives that align with your point of view.

I guess I selfishly say fuck the rest of the country, I've got people shitting in my backyard.

This. The only viable approach to "politics" in the generic sense. A poli sci professor convinced me of this in 1974.

I really am having to resist the urge to post "Is John Galt the Alabama EMA Director?" or "man, i fucking hate that my taxes are paying for any of these bullshit first responders" on fail book.

People would shit their pants, but its an object lesson for the new dumb.

This is my biggest problem as well... since when did helping poor people fall out of favor with a large group of Christianity? As many problems I have with the Catholic church, one saving grace I feel we have for the most part (I am a Catholic, converted from Lutheran) is that we still have some semblance of an idea of what the New Testament is really all about.

i don't know what that means or what opening it up in text edit proves, but i do know that when you open it up in illustrator various words are on different layers and the background is it's own layer.
