tapes are the worst music format ever invented. Only nostalgia makes them even remotely desirable.

And this, except without the nostalgia thing.

You've obviously never spent anytime splicing eight track tapes back together. Or for that matter, repairing a reel to reel player.

Any mention of reel to reel instantly reminds me of my dad playing Roger Whitaker "If" in one of our 45 living rooms wherever we happened to live.

That's cool. I have one, but it's always broken.

But you'll agree that cassettes are far superior to 8 tracks, right?

Sure, why not? If you can't make it work it's at worst a decoration/conversation piece and at best a prop for your next performance art masterpiece.

Absolutely. I actually forgot about 8 tracks in my original post.

My first car was a 1989 civic that only had a tape deck, so I was using tapes pretty much every day up until 2009. Now all of the tapes are in a box somewhere in my parents house. Not sure if I'll ever use any of them again.

Still have a couple tape decks, including a Nakamichi. Also, still have all my tapes from high school. But it's a fairly rare occurrence when I sit down and actually listen to a cassette.

So you prefer 8-tracks and 4-tracks? Which you obviously chose to play in your car in the 1980s instead of cassettes, right?

Please re-read thread where I said I forgot about 8-tracks. But I couldn't drive in the 80s so....

And I never meant it literally anyway. Very much hyperbole.

mine too. i feel like i should record more stuff, but i either have to buy a new 4-track, or learn Garageband, neither of which appeal to me at this time in my life.

i too have a reel to reel that is broken (it was my dads who brought it back from Vietnam). i saw it being sold on e-bay once for 50 bucks, but at this point, it may just have to go. it weighs a ton.

Had an all tape weekend. Pulled out the following from my old stash:

Smashing Pumpkins - Gish
Beatles - White Album (2nd tape, sides 3 and 4 I guess?)
Rolling Stones - Between The Buttons (dubbed from vinyl)
Nuggets - 65-68 - 1st set dubbed from vinyl (cd 1)
Janes Addiction - cassingle for "Stop" (side 1- Stop, I Would For You, Side 2- Three Days)

Blank tape - I've got bunches with nothing on them so I wanted to see what was there. The first side, and some of the second is a radio interview with Peter Buck. The host is some radio guy named "Redbeard". The interview is interspersed with some REM songs. I date it to sometime after "Monster" but pre-New Adventures in Hi-Fi.

The 2nd side (and some of the UGA folks will find this interesting) is me recording a show from Rock 103.7. It was the local music only show. The bands that were played (until the tape ran out) were Trinket, Dayroom, Kilgore Trout, Hayride, and Jack Logan.

Weird window into how late I was still operating with regards to tapes. That had to be circa 97-98

god I remember all those bands, especially trinket.

I have been buying tons of tapes from 2nd hand stores lately...just got Born in the USA, Some random Springsteen Boot, and The Travelling Wilburys - Vol. 1

i've got a tape deck in my 4runner so i'll listen to some old ones i still have around (mostly stuff i can't find on cd's or 90's hip hop cassingles) or ones that i've bought from burger records. only other cassette player i have is a small boombox. i might try and find a cheap one for a home stereo.
