Forgot to do this last week, my bad. This is the 17th "You Should Hear This" - with this, we have 3 topics in each decade + the 50s one.

Go for it, bros.

Maybe a little "too classic" for this thread. Still, this is a freaking great EP. When I forget how much R.E.M. used to rule, I put this one on, and I'm like, "Oh, yeah... now I remember!" Love it.

One of the great albums from my favorite metal band;one that they released right in the heart of my deepest metal phase, when I was an adolescent. I still cannot resist "You've Got Another Thing Coming". Any interest in 1980's metal at all, and you have to hear this record.

See Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengance.

Just a set of really great songs that further cemented XTC as one of the great, underappreciated bands of all-time. "Senses Working Overtime", "Yacht Dance", "Ball and Chain", etc., etc., etc....

I'm probably in a small minority in considering this the last truly great XTC album. I like Skylarking, but I like this and the preceding albums much, much more.

The last Capt. Beefheart album came out in 1982:

Ice Cream for Crow

One of his best. Gary Lucas on guitar. A great summation of Beefheart's music.

I'm with you Drinky. I played my vinyl copy to death, only to find the UK version on CD later and was overjoyed to find it included Knuckle Down and Yacht Dance, perhaps my all time favorite XTC track.

That's probably my favorite XTC song, too.
Dave Gregory is a motherfucker. Far too-often overlooked in discussions of great guitar players. (And Andy is no slouch, either.)

Also, seeing this footage just makes me sad all over again that I will never see this band play live.

Contradiction turned me onto these guys starting with 1991's 'Oh, Yeah', which led me to this incredible record from 1982. If you're fan of the Fab Four then I highly recommend this.

The SpongeTones are without a doubt the finest example of pure, unadulterated Beatlesque joy to emanate from the indie pop underground."

The Spongetones are aglow with a forward-thrusting musical abandon that recalls the glory days of many of the most familiar British Invasion front-liners, including the Beatles, the Dave Clark Five, the Zombies and the Who....But the SpongeTones' music has little of the rote, dogmatic obeisance of mere revivalism; instead, it sounds like the soundtrack to a party so good it could never happen in real life."

pretty good year...I'll go with

Image

from AMG:

On the one hand, where the Dream Syndicate came from was so obvious that it almost hurt. The Velvet Underground was a clear touchstone (if not quite the original LaMonte Young ensemble the band name referred to), as were the Doors, the Byrds, and any number of blues and country traditions and more. Had they been around in the late '60s, one might have wondered whether they would have garnered much attention in comparison. But the early '80s was the band's time and place, and their fusions of all the above and more via punk-inspired energy achieved its own level of deserved attention. Capturing the original killer Wynn/Precoda/Smith/Duck lineup performing with inspiration throughout, The Days of Wine and Roses trumps the "paisley underground" tag the band was saddled with by being a great rock record, full on. While Wynn received the lion's share of attention thanks to his ghost-of-Lou Reed vocals and frontman status, arguably it's Precoda who is the real reason to listen in. Both his rave-ups and gentler shadings are phenomenal, as a random listen of songs like "Definitely Clean" and the sweet, Smith-sung "Too Little, Too Late" show. The Smith/Duck rhythm section grooves along fairly enough, at its best on the Krautrock-inspired chug of Precoda's composition "Halloween." Highlights include the romping "Then She Remembers," with a much more direct Wynn vocal that makes for good in-your-face fun, and the mid-tempo moodout of "When You Smile," Precoda's screeching feedback playing around the mix's edges. Concluding with the epochal title track, which builds to a frenetic climax not once but twice, The Days of Wine and Roses is a grand treat.

Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul - Men Without Women

Featuring a band that included the E Street guys as well as Jean Beauvoir of the Plasmatics, with help from Gary U.S. Bonds and Felix Cavaliere, this first Little Steven solo album was pretty much what one might expect - meaning tough, Stones/Springsteen derived, R&B and soul influenced rock 'n' roll. "Under the Gun" sounds like it could've come straight from Keith Richards himself.

The Gun Club - Miami

There's always been a critical preference for The Fire of Love, but this album remains my fave Gun Club release. Jeffrey Lee Pierce flexes his muscles and expands his palate a little more on this one. Chris Stein's production is a tad weak, but it almost adds to the weirdly pulsing atmosphere of this thing.

The Morells - Shake and Push

A disc of what's come to be known as roots music, or Americana, or some such thing. This used to be called rock and roll. Guitarist D. Clinton Thompson also served in the Ozark Mountain Daredevils and bassist Lou Whitney is one of those guys whose name pops up all over the place throughout rock history (and continues on to this day - look for his name next time you're checking credits in this genre). Shake and Push didn't change the paradigm, but it navigated the old one as good as any band ever did.

Mental As Anything - Cats and Dogs

This was a compilation of their two Aussie-only albums, and it served as a fine intro to the band. "The Nips Are Getting Bigger" was the pure noo wave pop shot, but "If You Leave Me, Can I Come Too?" was the almost hit. As told by the titles, these guys didn't mind plunging into the superficially wacky, although that comic surface often hid a much darker depth (that first song, for example, is about alcoholism, while the second masks a lethal amount of self-loathing). Their subsequent albums were fine, but none managed to find the loony spark of these earlier tunes.

Seminal precursors to the alt.country movement of the early 1990's. Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, the Waco Brothers, The Sadies and many others all owe a huge debt of gratitude to Rank and File.

...a few others

Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska
DB's - Repercussion
Bill Nelson - The Love That Whirls

I'm assuming everyone's heard the Roxy Music album, so here are some others.

Instant house party, just add Blue Whales:

I don't care what anyone says, this is their best album:

Other '82 goodness:

Not sure if folks know much more than whatever hits compilations are out there, but the Furs' first four albums are fantastic:

Dear god, how fail is that Aerosmith record?

I don't have a lot to input on 1982 so I'll be interested to see what gets thrown out. The critics lists from the year are pretty consistent in liking Bruce, Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, [i[Shoot Out The Lights[/i] and Laurie Anderson's Big Science

A couple I like...

Image

I can listen to the later show on this pretty much anytime. So perfect.

Image

Terrible cover and some shaky tunes but "Cleaning Windows" is such a great song.

Say what you will about the rockabilly revival of the 80's, this was a great record; one of those records where every single song could have been a hit, given the right promotion. Not the least bit original, but who cares, when the songs are this strong? Knock-you-on-your-ass great.

Here are a couple of the album cuts:

and, yes it's LOLriffic, but i have to admit spending an inordinate amount of 1982 listening to this (cut me some slack, i was in 10th grade):

Just acquired this:

And, although I have not yet listened to it, I am going to go out on a limb and say that fans of the Paisley Pop movement of the 80's should probably give it an ear. At least based upon what I've read about it. I will send an update later today, after I actually listen.

EDIT:
I listened to it. After that one listen, it is okay -- a 3/3.5-star release. Solid, but unspectacular. In that sense, it is disappointing, as I had a lot of hope for a "tougher-sounding Bangles." Their debut LP destroys this one. Still, for fans, it is worth a listen and I guess that you should hear this.

Flipper - Generic
I think these guys were on drugs.

Image
King Sunny Ade - Juju Music
I don't like this as much as some of the earlier stuff you can get on comps, but it's still pretty great. West African guitar is for hipsters of the late '00s, though, so be careful.

Image
The Fall - Hex Enduction Hour
Banned from 37 school libraries.

Image
Richard & Linda Thompson - Shoot Out the Lights
You all know about this. Obligatory post.

Image
Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska
You'd think this was his lo-fi experimental album from the way people talk about it.

Image
Sonic Youth - Sonic Youth EP
Hey look, it's Sonic Youth's debut. It's really good. It was reissued several years ago with enough bonus tracks to pad it out to LP length. I'd recommend getting that.

Image
Richard Hell & The Voidoids - Destiny Street
This is a lot better than some people would have you believe.

Lots of good stuff in this thread, especially that Rank and File, Descendents and Gun Club, and I think Rio is a fine album.

But Diver Down? The Kinks cover is decent, but most of the rest of it really blows, IMO. And that Grandmaster Flash record is overrated too. "The Message" is good, but much of that album isn't even rap, IIRC.
