Yesterday, I went on a bike ride for the first time since probably junior high. Went about 15 miles all together and then ruined any calorie burning that occurred by winding up at a German place eating potato pancakes and drinking beer. Then again, I would have eaten and drank beer without the riding, so I guess it's a positive. I do need to buy a much more comfortable seat for my bike before I try this again though. Ouch. At least a couple people I was with knew about bikes and were able to make some adjustments to mine to make sure it was functioning properly after being salvaged from my little brother's basement collection of crap.

This is awesome! If you get out and bike 15 miles once a week, you can pretty much follow it with whatever calorie intake you want. Also be careful about going too wide on a new seat, though, it can interfere with your hamstrings I think. A smallish seat with better padding might work best, but hell, you never know til you spend a few hours on it. I have one a friend gave me ten years ago that I cling to, they don't make them anymore (Koski Engineering), and I know it's comfy. Everything else is a gamble.

I know City Museum is about the best thing to see for kids and adults love it too. I'll go ask a couple people with kids I know what they suggest as I'm nto exactly a font of kid friendly knowledge.

Off the top of my head though I'd say the zoo, which is a really nice one and free. It also gets you in Forrest Park, which is quite nice and there's also a really good Art Museum there and a History Museum. A walkway across the highway connects that stuff to a really nice Science Center, again free. You could kill a day easy at those places. And, you'd be close to the Loop in U-City if you want to pop over there for dinner, or lunch or whatever. If you're still into Burgers, Blueberry Hill has some good ones, and you can see old Chuck Berry guitars and lots of rock 'n' roll memorabilia and see the St. Louis walk of fame out front. It's the bar where Chuck Berry still plays each month. There are also things like City Park downtown, which is fun for kids and has a bunch of sculptures and stuff around. And the Botanical Gardens makes a nice family stop on the South Side, getting close to my hood.

How old are the kids? What kind of stuff you looking for? I know enough family types I could ask around for suggestions.

wow sounds like stl has a lot of free stuff. i can get a nicer hotel now.

my kid is 6 and this trip is pretty much a summer trip for him, so the zoos and museums are probably gonna be the main things

are there any cool hotels?

There is one new-ish hotel on Delmar in the Loop that has a nice restaurant and a rooftop bar that I know of. That gets you plopped down in the middle of a somewhat interesting neighborhood down the street from Blueberry Hill and Vintage Vinyl. But really, the only hotels I've stayed in locally, I don't think you'd want to visit with a six year old. Here's a link to the Moonrise Hotel...if you feel like springing for something fancy-ish:
http://www.moonrisehotel.com/

If I find out any more kid-friendly things to do, I'll let you know. You gonna be in town on weekdays or over the weekend? That time of year, there are usually some festivals or something going on somewhere on weekends for more free entertainment.

Or...since you'll be all mellow and parent-like, you could get a cheap yet nice room at a B&B in the city:

Soulard is a great place to visit for the STL noob (I know from experience). Will give mini-Toots a look into the past of St. Louis, if he's into that type of thing.

I'm sure he'd also like to take a trip up into the Arch and I'll second the visit to City Museum. It's completely essential.

I love St. Vincent, and this just makes me love her even more--

I'd love her to do an entire album in this vein. Dang. Such a great cover. She shreds!

Is there a website for that children's museum? That place looks like it'd be awesome if they served beer ;)

Dern, molos using grandfather clauses to live above a children's museum in ATL. Despite 'layers of security' why do I see this ending in disaster?

Actually...City Museum does serve beer...and stays open late-ish on the weekends. You can get drunk and climb that shit until 1AM on Friday and Saturday nights. And yes, they do get sued a lot and their insurance rates are outrageous. The owners have occasionally been known to burn an effigy of one local lawyer.

It's not strictly a kids place. I've seen Fishbone play there and a burlesque gig there and been to weddings and stuff there as well.

yeah it's so much more than that. Better description would be "13 story tripping-balls playground." There is nothing museum-like about it, really. Or maybe "Gigantic fucking awesome jungle gym."

this

also, the rooftop slide and ferris wheel at night are incredible. Especially when you have a buzz on. There are only 2 places that sell beer that I know of. One on the bottom floor. There is a tiny little pub tucked away and then up on the 2nd floor there is a kitschy arcade that has beer.
