Seriously?!!? I was a Royals fan in the '80s... does that count?

Haven't had a favorite baseball team that I followed closely since the Twins in the early 90's.

You midwesterners. I never know where your sports loyalties lie.

Nebraska football (well, all Husker sports teams really) is the only constant for me...

Pro sports for somebody growing up in Nebraska was alien, being so far away from any local teams, hence so many Kansas City fans (it's the closest thing).

My loyalties in MLB, NFL and NBA have varied over the years, with factors other than just being immersed in the daily grind of following a certain team. My pro sports loyalties have definitely "evolved".

MLB
Royals in the 80's (George Brett was my favorite player growing up)
Twins in the 90's (Kirby Puckett was my second favorite player growing up) (also anti-Braves)
Anti-Yankees in the 00's
Brewers now, mainly just to being so close to it and actually following the day-to-day details (Plus, Ryan Braun)

NFL
49ers in the 80's (Joe Montana, Roger Craig & Tom Rathman were my favorite players growing up)
Anti-Cowboys in the 90's
Packers off-and-on in 90's & 00's (Ahman Green, Brett Favre, locally-owned team being primary reasons)
Packers now, again mainly just being so close to it (getting caught up in the Super Bowl fervor was just an added bonus)

NBA
Lakers in the 80's (Magic Johnson was my favorite player growing up
Pistons & Suns in the late 80's & 90's (HUGE Bad Boys fan & Charles Barkley was my second favorite player growing up)
Anti-Bulls until late in Jordan's career (when begrudging respect won the day)
Bucks now, again close to it, following it day-to-day

NHL
Penguins in the 80's & 90's (Mario Lemieux was my favorite player)

Also,
Went to school at the University of Arkansas, so still some Razorback love in me...
Love Marquette's basketball team over the past couple of years (Buzz Williams is great and easy to root for, plus proximity)

There, you know my sports loyalties.

when i was a little kid, way back in the early/mid-'70s, my favorite teams in each sport were the celtics, dolphins, dodgers and bruins

got on board with the cowboys in '75 (but had a intense oiler fling from '78-'92), spurs in '76 and was a die-hard astros fan from '79-'94 until moving up here to big d and latching onto them sorry rangers

nhl-wise, i loved edmonton until moving up here and becoming STAR-struck

only consistent life-long love has been the universally despised fightin' irish - no matter how many times i try to swear those MFers off, they keep worming their way back into my system

Daddy issues. But don't be ashamed: MotherJones.com blogger Kevin Drum is a rabid USC rooter since his parents went there. Drum himself went to Long beach State or something.

Orioles continue to slide.

From the Balto Sun--
Quote:
"If Reynolds, who homered in the O's 4-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners Sunday, but is hitting just .198, continues to flail miserably at the plate, he could join John Gochnauer of the 1902-03 Cleveland Indians as the only major leaguers in history to hit below .200 in consecutive years in which they had at least 300 at-bats."

That's 20 points higher than Dan Uggla's BA right now. Our biggest off season pick up.

Since May 15th, he's hitting .035.

Ladies & Gents, I give you our clean up hitter.

Jordan Lyles finally gave us some hope for the future in the pitching department. Though I can't say one game is enough for me to start looking at him as the Mike Scott reincarnate.

As expected Hunter Pence is having a nice year, the rest of my 'Stros lineup is meeting my expectations as a nice combination of miserable and laughable.

At least you had a clean-up hitter. The O's kinda just supposed that someone would step up to protect 'Kakes and move into that position. Luke Scott was the front-runner, but he's been completely streaky (as usual).

I can't believe the Orioles waived him last year, considering our non-existent infield options.

True. Although, I guess they saw a log-jam situation.
Orioles: Adams, Andino, Hardy, Reynolds
AAA Norfolk: Josh Bell, Brendan Harris, Rhyne Hughes, Zach Booker, Nick Green, Brandon Synder
Moving up fast: Manny Machado
The O's kinda have a surplus of talent. Bell, Harris, and Hughes could all feasibly play MLB level in the coming year/next year.

Don't know if this is a photoshop hack, or real. Its making rounds on Twitter and FB, though:

Harris, Hardy, Reynolds, Green and Machado weren't in the picture when Turner was waived, and Adams and Booker were still in the mid-minors.

No, but the O's knew they were going to go after infielders in the off-season. They may have drafted Machado by then...or the draft was close, and he was pretty much ours.

I get that Posey was a big asset to the team, and a player they could build a franchise image around--but they kinda need to stop complaining about this incident.

Giants GM Brian Sabean rips Scott Cousins, says club would be happy if he never plays in big leagues again

If you wanna change the rules, fine. If you wanna mourn the loss of a star player for a year, fine. But once you start flapping about a player not playing ever again, you start sounding like a whiny ass.

Nary a word on the draft, huh? Rendon going to the Nats? But really, this is pretty awesome and you Georgia boys (any baseball fan, really) will have a smile on yr face after reading this:

The University of Georgia may be located in the middle of Atlanta Braves Country, but the Texas Rangers just picked up more than a few new fans in Athens.

Heck, the Rangers will be admired across the whole country, really, after they used their 33rd-round selection in MLB's amateur draft to select Bulldogs junior outfielder Johnathan Taylor on Wednesday afternoon.

Normally that wouldn't be very newsworthy, but Taylor is paralyzed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair after a tragic on-field collision with teammate Zach Cone in early March.

After selecting Cone with the 37th overall pick on Monday, the Texas front office told him they were thinking it'd be nice to also draft Taylor as a show of support as he rehabs and works toward the dream of being able to walk again.

They were right — and they made it happen on Wednesday.

Quote:
From GeorgiaDogs.com:

"This was truly a classy move and a great gesture on the part of the Texas Rangers organization," said Georgia coach David Perno. "J.T. is definitely a player worthy of getting drafted. He's been a big part of our program, and we are all very excited for him. When I talked to him after he got the call, he was in the middle of his rehabilitation work, laughing and having a good time and was thrilled to be drafted."

Johnathan's mother, Tandra Taylor, described the news as "awesome" and said her son's face "lit up" when he heard about the pick. Taylor is in rehab after injuring the C-5 and C-6 vertebrae in his neck during a game on March 6 against Florida State. Because his spinal cord was not severed, doctors believe there is room for improvement.

Baseball teams routinely use later-round picks to symbolically draft players who may never play for them, like the son of a manager or someone else in the organization. In 1993, then-Chicago White Sox GM Ron Schueler selected his daughter, a softball star, in the 43rd round. Five years earlier, Tommy Lasorda famously used a 62nd-round pick on a little-known catcher as a favor to a family friend. (Guy by the name of Mike Piazza.)

The Rangers' selection of Taylor was a token selection and a way to show support, yes. But it was also a way of saying they knew of the talent that he possessed before the accident. An honor roll student his first two seasons, Taylor had a .312 career batting average over 117 games for Georgia and may have had a future on the diamond.

Georgia considered — and still considers — Taylor to be the "soul" of their program.

"Anyone who ever saw J.T. play knows that if he didn't have this tragic accident, he was going to play pro ball at some point," Perno told ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach.

The Rangers agreed with that sentiment:

"We thought selecting Johnathan was the right thing to do," Rangers director of amateur scouting Kip Fagg said. "We would have drafted him either way, regardless of any other circumstances involving his injury or Zach's draft status. Our area scout in Georgia, Ryan Coe, has had a relationship with Johnathan since he was a high school player. The club has always liked his passion and ability as a player."

At any rate, there are hundreds of high school and college ballplayers getting great phone calls this week as they're drafted into a chance of making the big leagues. While Johnathan Taylor's call may not have come exactly how he imagined it would, it's still pretty cool that the Rangers took the time to remember him. Well done.

Obner's Metroplex commissar would be all over this confluence of his Tejano sycophancy & GARchipelagan egoism, if the player were to have a cool &/or "cool", natural nickname (MASTA). Failing that, tears.

Not to be outdone--

Of the 50 names, most unfamiliar, in the Astros’ draft class, there is one story that stands out beyond the others.

Buddy Lamothe, the 40th-round pick, will never play for the Astros.

The San Jacinto College star reliever, was paralyzed in a swimming accident in San Marcos last month, and the Astros drafted him as a nice gesture to a devastated family.

The Vermont native had left home for Texas, where he had begun the season with an 0.86 ERA only to have it end in tragic fashion.

The Astros weren’t the only team to make such a gesture.

The Rangers spent their 33rd-round pick on Johnathan Taylor, the University of Georgia outfielder who was paralyzed in an outfield collision with Rangers second-round pick Zach Cone.

Well done.

rumor has it that the rangers fired their hitting coach becuase he threw a hissy fit that they drafted a paralyzed guy

Save it for your stand up act FT. I was going to post this this morning but I got tied up.

Rangers just became my 2nd favorite team. Total class move.

He was going to be a pro prospect. It's heartbreaking. That's 2 UGA baseball players that have been paralyzed in the last 3 years. One on the field and the other in a scooter accident.

They would've been batting 1 and 2 this year.
