Regionals start this weekend.

I'm only feigning an interest because my alma mater (Texas State) is in the bracket (taking on the alma mater of Chrissy Hynde and DEVO, Kent State - also see: Ohio, four dead in).

Looks like other Ob schools in the mix include:

Navy (TCB's fav) vs. top-seeded Virginia
UCLA (harry, of course) vs. San Francisco
NC State (two guns tommy fudge) vs. Stetson
GA Tech (dana) vs. Austin Peay
Arkansas (huskerpunk) vs. Charlotte
Vandy (gauchebag) vs. Belmont (no, not shiv)
Oregon St. (rogneeb) vs. UALR
Georgia (do i really need to list all 30 of them here?) vs. Creighton
North Carolina (putin de los negro) vs. Maine (frostingspoon?)

I miss the days of the Big 8--Oklahoma State under Tom Holiday, Nebraska, Oklahoma, UT--the Big 8 conference tournament was bigger than March Madness to me when I was little.

Anyways, I love the Creighton/UGA and Vandy/Belmont matchups. Also think SF will get through UCLA and have a decent showing.

Not much interest... still a Dave Van Horn fan, even though he ditched the Huskers for the greener pastures of Fayetteville, Arkansas.

So, go Hogs!

and, to a much lesser extent, go Creighton...

Nebraska beat Creighton 2-1 in the season series, and nearly came back from a 9 run deficit to sweep the series in the final game.
TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha is amazing. I can't wait to see how the CWS goes at the new ball park.
Nebraska will dominate the Big Ten in Baseball, but they might not ever make it back to Omaha for the CWS with the current Big Ten scholarship rule that governs players leaving early for the Big Leagues.

Full bracket here http://espn.go.com/ncaa/bracket?id=6607258 if anyone is interested.

Should have looked closer this morning; SF potentially facing UVA if they get through that UCLA/Fresno/Irvine mix. Not good for them.

Love this regional--though whoever comes out should have to play Rice which certainly isn't ideal--hoping for TCU or OU (TCU (42-17) Oral Roberts (36-20) Dallas Baptist (39-17) Oklahoma (41-17))

This one will be fun too, with U of A, FSU, and A&M all in the mix.
5 Florida St. (42-17)/BCC (36-23)
Alabama (33-26)/UCF (38-21)
Texas A&M (42-18)/Wright St. (36-17)
Seton Hall (33-23)/Arizona (36-19)

The number one sporting event to go see on my list. Don't care about ever going to the Super Bowl, Rose Bowl, Final Four, but will someday get out to Omaha for the CWS.

Thanks for posting that. I do love some CWS, especially when UGA is in it.

Dawgs are tied with Cal for the worst records in the field this year but don't let that fool you. We also had the #1 RPI in the country this year and beat 2 teams in the Top 5 in the SEC Tourney to get in.

Been a pretty tough year. Early in the season one of our starting outfielders collided with the centerfielder and he was paralyzed. Jonathan Taylor. Pretty emotional stuff. He showed up for the SEC tourney game in his wheelchair against #2 Florida. Dawgs won and it essentially put them in the post-season.

We're traveling a long way but I like this draw.

I hope the overall feeling of the event stays the same (or perhaps even gets better) after the move from Rosenblatt. It is a pretty special event, and I hope it's in Omaha forever.

After that run UGA made in 2001 I will never count them out again. I completely agree--all things considered UGA got a good draw.

Also, can't wait to see the abundance of ACC teams fail quickly.

Looking at the bracket again, I'm completely wrong about this. It's not even close. There are some teams with just over 20 wins in there.

I know they select teams via committee like the basketball tourney but does baseball also have automatic qualifiers? Like, if you win your tourney, you're in?

I wasn't very impressed by UCLA after an equally mediocre Nebraska squad took two of three from them in an early season series, yet the Bruins seemed to be ranked all year with a mediocre record. I'm not discrediting their star pitchers, I just don't think 32-22 merits a #12 ranking by Baseball America
Fresno State was far more impressive against my Huskers this season, so I'm picking them to win that region, despite the fact both UCLA and UCI are ranked above them in the Baseball America poll.

Yes, every team that wins a conference tourney gets an automatic bid, that is why the Big Ten gets to field at least one team this year.
I think there RPI system needs to be adjusted a bit, I think it favors pre-season rankings and historical performanceof both conference and teams a bit too much. Texas A&M should have gotten the top eight seed after winning the Big 12 tournament, but the Longhorns got one instead thanks to tying for the regular season title and having a history of CWS titles.

Former Husker Football and Baseball player Darin Erstad is expected to be named the new head coach of the Nebraska Baseball team.

http://huskerextra.com/sports/baseball/ ... e02b7.html

I think he'll make a fine coach in a conference as weak as the Big Ten, but he needs to find a quality Pitching coach ASAP. The Huskers haven't been that great since A&M hired Rob Childress to be their head coach. The Huskers should have picked him instead of Anderson to replace Van Horn, but the past is in the past.

I hope Erstad succeeds... love him personally. Probably can't do much worse than Anderson, and with the move to the weaker Big Ten, he should at least be near the top of the league already in his first year of being a head coach. Good Luck, Darin!!!

Creighton 2, Georgia 1
Charlotte 3, Arkansas 2

Both went the opposite of how I thought they'd go down...

I cheered when I saw that Creighton beat UGA, since the Huskers split the series in Omaha and won the only game that was played in Lincoln. The Huskers used to be the whipping boy in the series, but have basically dominated the series since I moved to Lincoln.
I remember UGA being there the first year that Nebraska made the CWS and how weided out their fan base was by the Go Big Red chants.

So let me get this straight. You cheered when UGA lost because the team that beat us, you beat in the regular season a month or so ago?

Okay.

Weird how that happens when it's 1500 miles away for Georgia fans and it's in your backyard.

You know what else I remember. UGA winning it all in 1991 and Nebraska getting their ONLY win in the CWS in 2005. Not championship. Single win.

I cheered when Nebraska got beat by........oh wait......they didn't make the tournament this year.

No, I cheered because Nebraska (The Second worst baseball team in the Big 12) beat Creighton (a ranked team and in state rival) in their best of three series once again, and then Creighton (The only team from the MVC to make the field) won an opening round game. It had nothing to do with it being UGA, it could have been Cal State Fullerton, UCLA, LSU, Arizona State or USC and I would have had the same reaction.

As for the UGA fans at the 2001 CWS, I wasn't attempting to insult them. I was merely mentioning that a bunch of loud Husker fans who had never been to the CWS may have annoyed and overwhelmed fans at a Sports Bar outside Rosenblatt with several Go Big Red chats. I simply mentioned the UGA fans, since they had a rather large constituency there as well. It seemed to be mostly Husker, Tulane, Georgia and Stanford fans out and about during the first few days of the event.

I'm rather proud of the one Husker win at the CWS, it surpasses their win total in the NCAA Basketball tournament. There aren't many Northern teams that have made the CWS since the early 80's, and the Huskers appearance total matches schools like UCLA, Georgia Tech and surpasses a previous winner like Pepperdine.

P.S. I was wrong about Fresno State winning their region.

Georgia eliminates Creighton in an 11 innings.

Rice and Texas remain the only top eight national seeds to have a loss so far this tournament.

If the Beavs can't win 1 of 2 then it'll be a pretty epic choke job.

FWIW, you could've said anything after "I cheered when Creighton beat UGA" and it wouldn't have mattered.

It triggered the mechanism.

my alma mater (texas state) would have eliminated the longhorns today, if not for a rally in the bottom of the 9th
