U2: The Unforgettable Fire

I know it is fashionable to ridicule U2 these days, but this was them still making solid records before things got too big and bloated. It's probably the last U2 record I ever warmed to as Joshua Tree came next and that one lost me. But, this really is a very good record and I think The Edge gets too often overlooked when guitar players are mentioned. I've heard a lot of people mock him for using too many effects and always sounding the same from song to song, but he really dis play a major role in developing quite a unique guitar style and I think being able to come along and make your mark with an instantly recognizable, unique sound among the masses of guitar player of any era is an impressive feat. This record is a great document of that sound.

I know that I've talked this one up before (several times), but nonetheless, this is a good description of this great, dark blues band from Down Under.
From The Trouser Press:
Quote:
Although the lone Birthday Party alumnus in this dark and bluesy Australian quartet is drummer Phill Calvert, it's singer Ian "Quinsy" McLean and his obvious Nick Cave fixation that establishes the stylistic bond between Such Sweet Thunder and From Her to Eternity. With Blue Ruin providing the basic guitar-bass-drums framework and dramatic vocals, guests add the sax, harmonica and keyboards coloration that make hard-edged numbers like "She's Murder," "Waterhole" and "Love Me When I'm Low" engrossingly atmospheric.

Other than guitarist Mulaim Vela's organ work, Flame again relies on session players (trombone, strings, sax) for its musical flavoring. Overall, Blue Ruin's second album takes a better-adjusted path, relegating a chunk of the group's jagged intensity and bleakness to the downcast — not quite dissolute — and violent lyrics. (Strangely, Flame includes a new rendition of the first album's vindictive "What a Hell'uva Woman.")

The powerfully live Strange Things in the Corner was recorded over a pair of May 1988 nights in Melbourne. Other than Willie Dixon's "I Just Wanna Make Love to You" (given an alternately slow/fast but consistently tuneless reading) and one band original, all of the tunes come from the two studio albums. (Yep, "Hell'uva Woman" makes its third appearance.)

21st Century Dub

Was mentioning ROIR cassettes in another thread and had just come across a copy of this over the weekend after not hearing it for several years. There's a bit of back story to this release, so I'm just gonna copy and paste a bit here....

The inspiration for 21st Century Dub came when Bob Marley toured Japan in 1979 and met Japanese electronica wizard Pecker (so named for his woodpecker-like twitching while playing percussion), who was fascinated with the Jamaican dub scene. Invited by Marley to bring key members of The Yellow Magic Orchestra to Jamaica for sessions, the extraordinary results of Pecker's work with both Studio One and Tuff Gong musicians were released on two albums in Japan in 1980, then on cassette only by ROIR in 1987. This first cd release of the recordings remains diverse and engaging, if more technically flashy as a result of Pecker's contributions. Strong dub jams like "Mystical Cosmic Vibration" and "International Orchitis" show the strong influence of Jamaican percussion duo Sly and Robbie, and contrast the more techno tunes by Pecker such as "Pecker Power Pt. 2". In between lie great versions of "Jamming" and "Concrete Jungle" recorded with the blessing, if not the participation, of Bob Marley himself. - Craig Tower

Anyway, however this came about, it is some really great dub. Enjoy.

America Reads: Towers Open Fire

Cassette only release from 2009. Droning, haunting ambient electronics from Digitalis Ltd., they seem to be quite good at releasing this sort of thing. An excellent example right here.

Yup, Digitalis and all its sub-labels/website has a plethora of great stuff.
