The reason why I chose this record is simply cause it is great and probably one of my Top 15 faves of all time. Catchy, fun, 90's esque commercial indie rock with a bit of influence from OK Computer.., that had enough catchy songs that in a 'right' world, should have sold 8 million copies...This is the band's self released version on a tiny label. Sony Records had picked them up, but the record never stood a chance as it was set for release on 9/11/01, when everything in the world went on hold. The Sony version sucked though. they polished the hell out of the songs and took every ounce of balls from the record.

Flickerstick's Welcoming Home the Astronauts

Image

If you know the band or their 'origins', give em a chance anyways....Not everything from 'that' world, is shitty.
If you have never heard of them, then hold off on doing any wikipedia search till you played it once or twice for the same reason above...Too easy and quick to immediately dismiss these guys.

If you are one of the small few from the board who have heard this record, let me know, and I'll get ya something else...

Enjoy.

I am one of the few. This fact alone should be reason for concern in regards to your credibility. ;)

Weren't they part of some reality show on MTV to see who could make the most money at gigs, etc? I faintly remember their name.

Thanks for blowing their cover gang!
FS deserved to win as they were light years better than the other 3 bands...The were a real band and knew how to play their instruments. The other three (Josh Dodes Band excluded) were amateur garage bands at best....

and Harlow did suck. I was friends and worked with the bass player, so I was polite about their musical talents.

This was probably my favorite reality series...

anyways, Flickerstick's record is virtually perfect IMO

They were also on Garageband.com when the site was starting out and was a cool place.
I loved that place.

Well, TK is nothing if not consistent with his defense of this band.

01. Life (With Love We Will Survive) - First impression here. Hmmm. Sounds very arena-rocky. The sound of the semi-soaring vocals and the guitar wankery and everything. Still, as made-for-radio anthemic rock goes, the song isn't bad. A little long though to effectively get me excited out of the gate. 5/10

02. Talk Show Host - And by comparison, this song just flew by. I barely paid attention to it! I guess that means it didn't catch my ear enough to make me say "what is this shit?" I'll probably revisit this one later. Needless to say, the song is not as good as "Roid Rage Talk Show" by the band Zoinks! 6/10

03. Chloroform The One You Love - Great title! Hmm, I can sense the quiet/loud dynamic coming. I can hear it building! YES! A loud chorus! Thank you Flickerstick for confirming my predictions! Hmm, that was kinda a short chorus though. I like the verses and the harmonized "aahhhhs" in the pre-chorus anyway. Best song yet, though I wish it had a catchier solo/bridge part. 7/10

You have liked each passing song more than the last. I can dig that.

04. Coke - This is not only some mid-tempo rock ballad shit, it's also apparently attempt to get in some Coke commercial. Sorry, this is terrible. 1/10

05. Beautiful - In general the band isn't winning any award for lyrics. Verses here are weak, but the chorus pumps it up well enough. That being said, it's still pandering to the top 40 crowd of the time. after 5 songs in, I can safely claim this really isn't in my wheelhouse. TK, did you really think that I'd like this? Please tell me it's due to my lack of articulate posting and/or your indifference to my tastes, and not because you think I'm a bland alt-rock doofus. I'm seriously worried, now. Also the lead in to the next song is cut weird. 4/10

06. Sorry...Wrong Trajectory - Nice guitar pluck/hooks. The vox are definitely "everyman"-ish, nothing distinct at all, but maybe that is what makes it fit with the sound/style of the band. 4/10

07. You're So Hollywood - More of the same, though this is more concise has got enough oomph to be tolerable. The rhymes are still pretty laughable. 5/10

08. Got A Feeling - This ain't bad. Sounds like Bleu a little bit. Not quite at that level, but a valid attempt. I like the almost-false ending 3/4ths of the way through. 6/10

09. Hey Or When The Drugs Wore Off - Great Nirvana-esque riff rip off. Plus the squirrely synthy stuff. Still can't get over the "commercial" sound. Well, I probably could, if the songwriting were a bit stronger. 6/10

10. Right Way To Fly - More semi-soaring rock that doesn't pull any reaction from me good or bad. 4/10
