I can't recall the name but there is a huge used CD/vinyl shop a block or two west of Powell's Books on Burnside. There's a pretty good pub between the two shops--Henry's Tavern I believe.

I'll second this recommendation - that place is HUGE. Also, while you're in the neighborhood by Powell's, be sure and check out Jackpot Records which is just a block east of Powell's.

i went there 10 years ago, and it seemed like there was a used book/record store on every other corner.

Everyday Music on Sandy Blvd and Music Millenium on East Burnside are my favorites. There are several others scattered about.

Well, I gotta say, I was a little disappointed in Everyday Music. Went to the one on Sandy yesterday.

You walk in, and it's a big, airy square room without much personality- like a library without the high shelves. Interesting local posters are arranged neatly on the windows, and regular posters for sale on the walls. Most used CDs were priced pretty high (usually around $8.50), ordinary CDs that I found back home for $3, $2 or even fifty cents. Selection was very good in some cases, and non-existent in others. Was looking for some Split Enz, they had none. Looking for Symphony X, they had none. This happened several times- I'd think of a band and go to where they might be, and there would be a card with their name on it, but no discs. The selection of new discs seemed to be good, but I stayed away from those after glancing at the prices.

I did appreciate the Just In section. I guess when people bring in their CDs to sell, they are put in a bin according to the day brought in and alphabetized. This makes it nice for the regulars so they don't have to go back through the regular stock time & time again.

I found several CDs I would have bought had the price been a little more reasonable, but I put them all back. I finally found a pretty obscure Southern Culture On The Skids disc (Girlfight), a 6-song EP of older stuff, originally released as a 10-inch back in 1993. Priced well at $4.25. I found out why when I looked at it when I was paying for it- it looked like someone had tried to clean it with Ajax. I said "Wow" when I saw it, and the clerk said "If it doesn't play, bring it back." I figured I'd play it in the car on the way home to check it out, and it seemed to play fine. Whew. It's a good one to add to my SCOTS collection, so I wanted it to play, dammit!

No one seemed to care I was there- no one approached me as I was shopping, no one commented on the t-shirt I was wearing (a shirt from a record store back home), a HUGE disappointment . My local shop (Rasputin's) says "hi" when you come in the door, and they always ask if I'm finding what I'm looking for at some point in the course of my visit. The great thing about Rasputin's too, is that if I don't like a disc, I can take it back & get 76% credit towards something else. This influenced my buying at Everyday, as I knew that if I bought something, I was stuck with it.

I had hoped to hit to hit Millenium after Everyday, but time was short & I had to head back "home" with my miniscule loot.

Thanks for the tips anyway, guys. I'll try a few of the others next time, hopefully with better luck.

Yeah none of the big stores hold a candle to rasputin or amoeba, we're spoiled.
