bam! I knew I remembered that one. Was too young to audition for it though.

Topsail? I think that's the HS that was used. Some of the people even have those jackets on in the movie.

watched the Adjustment Bureau tonight. It was somewhere between bad and "eh?", and it's certainly not thrilling. I had nothing else to do, and it was minorly interesting enough, and I have preposterously low standards, so it was ok.

i would not have watched this movie
if the NBA playoffs were still going on
if I was alone in a hotel room and work was paying for the Spectravision movies on demand
if it was Saturday afternoon and there was golf on TV
if there was a Law & Order (SVU) that I hadn't seen on one of the HD channels

I would rather watch this movie than
    NHL playoffs
    WNBA playoffs
cooking shows not about Richmond, VA
any Ken Burns documentary that I've already seen that's on PBS

someone might have just photoshopped their faces onto an old perfume ad, because that is definitely not from a scene in the movie.

Since the last time I posted in here, I've watched:

Inception: I really enjoyed this, and despite whatever shortcomings you want to pin on it - which I probably wouldn't argue with - I thought it did a pretty good job of creating a fun little sci-fi universe of its own. Like I could see it spinning off into a TV show or something. That probably wouldn't be any good, but anyway...

The Expoding Girl: Recommended by a friend, on Netflix streaming, really short, kind of a "why not?" scenario. Still took us like three sittings to get through it. It wasn't bad, kind of a sweet story with nice shots and good acting and dialogue, but it was really, really slow and quiet with lots of shots of people looking bored and tired. Hard to watch at the end of a day when you're exhausted.

Black Swan: This was alright. I had forgotten that it was directed by Aronofsky by the time I finally got around to watching it. Definitely a return to the more exploitative stuff like Requiem for a Dream. I liked how oppressively dark it was (was there a single daytime shot that wasn't indoors?), but some of the CG surreality was too much. Made me more of a believer in Natalie Portman as a truly god actress, which admittedly I haven't ever been.

Kick-Ass: No better or worse than I expected. Exactly as good as the comic which was enjoyable but not great. A fun premise that becomes totally absurd and over-the-top which then becomes sort of the point. I thought that some of the departures from the comic were odd and killed some of the drama, but I also thought improved upon it in some places.

Winter's Bone: Loved this. Really great atmosphere and sense of dread throughout. Solid all around.

Super 8: We were going to go see Tree of Life our last time out, but we would have had to stay out much later and go way out of our way. So we decided to go see something shorter, more convenient, and a lot more fun. Really a blast. Obviously a sort of Goonies/ET hybrid with some other stuff thrown in. Just a great classic Spielberg-ish feel with great suspense and great kid characters. The summer popcorn movie to see, probably.

Has anybody seen Meek's Cutoff? Critics seem to love it, but imdb & metacritic users don't so much. Some people are saying it's like a Western version of "Somewhere" by Sophia Coppola. What say those who have seen it?

Thanks in advance!!!

Never go by IMDB ratings, its made by trolls and fanboys.

Watched this. Its ok. Its loosely based on Jesco and was filmed mostly in Croatia. Whatcha gonna do? Its not horrible, but I'd probably rather watch the original docs over this. It takes a turn for the crazy towards the end, and in a way its almost the most real thing in the film--seeing as it could've come from Jesco. Hasil Adkins songs galore were a nice touch, and definitely suited for it.

Transformers 3. this looks fantastic. michael bay's movies may have really weak characters, terrible stories and follow the same patterns, but they do look pretty great and this is no exception. my biggest problem with a lot of recent 3D movies has been that they blow their load on a couple great scenes and pretty much forget about it for the majority of the movie, but here it's used pretty well throughout its entirety. also need to note this is long at 153 minutes. the last 45 minutes is a lot of stuff from the previews where chicago gets destroyed. earlier on, milwaukee kinda fills in as washington dc. overall, it's just a big dumb summer blockbuster that's aesthetically pleasing. although, the lead "actress" is horrendous.

Summed up my thoughts on these movies. Oddly, our musical taste couldn't be farther a part but we always seem to have the same reactions to movies.

King's Speech - Good to Great movie. Awesome performances in a beautiful evocation of the time period. I thought Geoffrey Rush carried the flick, and should have been nominated for Best Actor outright. Also, doesn't hold a candle to The Social Network in terms of best pictures of 2010.

Inception Beautiful movie. Well put together. Good acting, as it were, but I swear Leo is always playing Leo - it's not like he's really losing himself in roles or anything. The other thing that bugs me about movies like this is that they SEEM deep, but in the end, the layers and layers and dreams within dreams plot devise wasn't any more or less intriguing or hard to discern that say, Chinatown - which was on right after this last night.

How to Train Your Dragon. i'm usually not one to complain about voicework, but i didn't think jay baruchel fit for the main character here. it just seemed like a strange selection. otherwise, this wasn't too bad. the animation was good and the story was fine, even though it veered from the book. the action sequences looked awesome. dreamworks is never going to match pixar, but they still make fine animated features.

Kiss Me Deadly. what the hell is this? it's like a detective movie that turns into the twilight zone and ends with a precursor to the end of raiders of the lost ark. the mike hammer character is barely likeable. his secretary is ridiculously hot but written pretty poorly. the plot is intriguing, but then goes into this almost sci-fi direction that's baffling. there's hardly any explanation for anything. it's just a weird movie in regard to pacing and story. although, i did like catching strother martin as a truck driver albeit in a weak scene.

Piranha - Tons of fun, I liked it lot for what it was. It was fitting to see all the asshole characters deservedly getting the most elaborate and ridiculous death scenes. I wish I would have seen this in the theater.

True Grit - Great movie. The acting was perfect and the movie itself had hardly any flaws, as with most Coen Bros. I think I'd rather re-watch A Serious Man if given the choice.

Jackass 3 - not much to say about this that hasn't been said...it's retarded, but it makes me laugh.

I Saw the Devil - Korean serial killer flick with the guy from Oldboy...good, not great. Very violent and disturbing, but beautiful looking film even though it was about a serial killer.

Ip Man 2 - Chinese martial arts bio pic about Ip Man, a martial arts instructor who teaches Wing Chun style. I really like this one and the first was was as good if not better.

My wife started watching this a week or so ago with her brother. She couldn't finish it and kept talking about how disturbing it was.

Trying to remember what all I watched over the past several days...

Boondock Saints. I finally had to see it, just to have an opinion of my own, I guess. It was pretty bad. I watched it with my brother-in-law who's a pretty big fan of it so I kinda pretended to enjoy it on some level even though I was sort of mocking it all along the way. There aren't many movies out there dumber than this, and even as a "dark comedy" (isn't that what Tommy Wiseau calls The Room now?) it mostly fails.

The Third Man. Maybe the best film noir I've seen to date? Beautiful movie, a real joy to watch and take in. But... there were things about it that didn't really make sense to me when looking back. Maybe it was meant to be left open-ended, but it didn't really feel that way when it ended. It was only afterward, when thinking back on it, that I was left wondering about different characters' motives and what the point of certain actions was. Anyway, it was perfectly executed that it's hard to have any qualms with it.

Mother. Korean psychological thriller, I guess? I mean it isn't really a thriller, more like a dark, psychological drama centered around two fairly disturbed - one of them mentally handicapped - people. A good movie. I'm starting to get a little weary of the almost forced "grittiness" in some of these Korean movies, but this is still one of the best ones I've seen.

The Asphalt Jungle. Back to noir stuff. Marilyn Monroe has a minor part in this, but I thought she was pretty bad, really. This was good, but out of the noir movies I've seen lately, it was probably the weakest.

The Man from Nowhere. Another dark, gritty Korean movie featuring the same actor who played the mentally handicapped kid in Mother. This was more of a straight thriller with a lot of action and gore. It was a fun movie if a little over the top.

Yeah Adjustment Bureau was very middle of the road. It wasn't confusing at all, which I guess is good, but it wasn't mind blowing or thrilling either. Everything was explained and wrapped up in a neat little package by the end. That being said, I'd say it's a good date movie because it has both action and romance. Something for everyone!

I watched Zombieland and Hot Tub Time Machine, both of which were sorta awesome.

Kyle/Busty/Derris et al - I seriously think they patterned Woody Harrelson's character in Zland after Chitwood. He paints 3 on his door, and is obsessed with Bill Murray.

And, Emma Stone - get thee to a part where you get butt naked already.

Hot Tub Time Machine was a nice lark on nostalgia and 80s awesomeness. I love the bad guys/ski patrol are named Blaine and Chad, and I believe Zabka plays the guy they bet on The Drive game with - which is pretty inspired casting.

Also, I'm really sorta chapped I missed out on the dumb 80s coke whore. I mean, we all knew a variation of her, but when their predilection is rap music or WSP, it's just not as endearing as a high waisted bikini bottom and a collection of Poison tapes.

I actually really enjoyed the Adjustment Bureau. I didn't go in expecting much, and was pleasantly surprised. As I'm sure everyone knows, it's based on a Philip K. Dick story.

Not really a spoiler, but: I thought it gives the best debate of free will vs. predetermination that I've seen in a movie.
