good question. same applies to a lot of songs of that nature. like "all along the watchtower".

I saw Further last night.

The concert was incredibly poorly organized and we ended up missing the first four songs because it took us 40 minutes to move about ten feet in line to get in the door. But once we got in I really enjoyed it. There were a few moments that were really tight and surprising and fun. Mostly it was just a relaxing way to enjoy the heat and dancing hippies.

They played Zep's "Fool In the Rain" which to the best of my knowledge the Dead never played, and fake Jerry sang lead and sounded just like Jerry doing "Fool in the Rain" which was eerie and admittedly kinda cool. The girl who sorta sings Donna's parts sings really techinically well which almost sounds wrong for the band, but she and the other backup vocal guy looked like they were having the time of their life so that made up for them having too much talent to play grateful dead songs.

Final review, a bit pricey, but I'd definitely go again next summer.

07/23/11 (Sat) Mann Music Center - Philadelphia, PA
Set 1: Sittin' on Top of the World, Greatest Story Ever Told, High on a Mountain, When I Paint My Masterpiece, Reuben and Cherise, Loser, The Last Time, Quinn the Eskimo

Set 2: Shakedown Street > Man Smart, Woman Smarter, Any Road (1), Playing in the Band > Help on the Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower > Playing in the Band (reprise) > Death Don't Have No Mercy, In the Midnight Hour E1: Fool in the Rain (2) E2: One More Saturday Night

Comment: (1) George Harrison cover, only played once before by Furthur (12-30-10)
(2) Led Zeppelin cover, only played once before by Furthur (4-01-11)

Lineup: Phil Lesh - bass
Bob Weir - guitar & vocals
Jeff Chimenti - keyboards
John Kadlecik - guitar & vocals
Joe Russo - drums
Jeff Pehrson - vocals
Sunshine Becker - vocals

I've never seen any of the post-Jerry Grateful Dead's. I will say that Fake Jerry is really fucking good.

Assess Bobby and Phil for us, Jewels. Please be brutal, kthx.

I have to say that they were really great. The camera guy pretty much only focused on Bob and it was neat to see how intricate all his chord work is. Guy is all over the neck with neat little tricks. And Phil sang and was on key and everything. I think the backup vocal duo really help round things out pitch wise, but they both were singing really well.

Fake Jerry is indeed really good. He occasionally plays guitar that is bluesier than Jerry ever did, but sometimes he's so much like him that it's spooky.

i came up with a theory last night that there is a higher rate of red heads in the hippie community than in the general population.

Furthur: 7/26/11 - Finger Lakes, Canandaigua, NY
I: Golden Road, Beat it on Down the Line, Promised Land, 900000 Tons of Steel, Dark Hollow, They Love Each Other, Train in Vain, Big Railroad Blues
II: Truckin' -> Smokestack Lightning -> I Want You (She's So Heavy) -> New Potato Caboose -> Dark Star -> Uncle John's Band -> Black Peter -> Gimme Some Lovin' -> Going Down the Road Feeling Bad -> And We Bid You Goodnight
E: Lazy River Road

This was a great show, fulfilled and surpassed my expectations, which were simply to hear the songs I love where they live strongest. Aside from a stunningly short first set (40-45 min), steeped in drippy bluegrass sounds – highlit by a languid "Dark Hollow", a rolling "TLEO", and a great tribute to Brent Mydland – Furthur put on a wonderfully crafted, intuitive, touching, and explorative performance. The second set entirely needs to be bolded and asterisked. Each song flew seamlessly into the next, and the song selection is unrivaled – like nothing you'd ever see from the Grateful Dead, and yet totally cohesive and natural – perhaps the most endearing quality of this band being the way they sculpt their sets. They pulled from the murky depths of age-old Dead, to the glint of latter days, dropped in covers that stood alone yet fit in like puzzle pieces, and built an explorative adventure around a swirling Dark Star (20 min) -> Uncle John's -> Black Peter suite. They played Dark Star! It really was a wonderful vibe and a gorgeous night. I encourage you to go, to this show over others.

that sounds like a really great show!

i've been thinking about "Help on the Way > Slipknot!" a lot since the show. It's a pretty amazing song and they nailed it.

Just got a text that they covered Ryan Adams' "Magnolia Mountain" tonight. Awesome.

Edit: I guess they've done it a bunch.

It's a little eerie. I've seen Dark Star Orchestra a couple of times.

Adams' 2006 tour was basically his version of the Dead's sound, so this isn't surprising at all. I actually got drunk enough to yell from the Ryman floor "play Dark Star". That was stupid. They played "He's Gone" and "Wharf Rat" that night.

I've got that Ryan Is Dead comp that is actually a fucking AWESOME 2 disc Dead Set.

By the by, I texted that monster back and told him to hitch his wagon to our stars for DBT next week.

how many discs/hours of music is this? It's my favorite authorized live collection of theirs, but that's the distilled 2-disc version.

72 discs, over 70 hours of music constituting the entire Europe tour.
