The Chambers Brothers - The Time Has Come

Most people know the psych-leaning track "Time Has Come Today", which I do like a lot, but the remainder forms a fine R&B/soul album with a touch of psych and folk thrown in.

Here ya go Wenchlette--

I really love this. It came in to our college radio station unassuming and overtook me immediately. Hope you dig.

Quote:
Essentially a solo project for Cursive's Tim Kasher, albeit with plenty of instrumental help from a variety of friends, the debut album from the Good Life is the culmination of 12 years of songwriting outside his full-time gig. Those 12 years must have been filled with some great bygone LPs and a fair helping of woe, because instead of the '90s indie pop of Cursive, Kasher explores stark and angular ground on Novena on a Nocturn that recalls no one more so than the Brit-pop icons of the 1980s. The dour and miserable sentiment of the Smiths and the Cure ("The Competition" would have fit perfectly on Disintegration) bleeds into the detached and alien sound of synth-pop combos like Human League and Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark, with the lush, melodramatic theatricality of new romantics Soft Cell and Ultravox draping over each song like a wet blanket. These are pure coffeehouse and cabaret tunes with a sustained atmosphere of haunting, world-weary ache. In addition to their '80s forebears, the songs explore the timeless songcraft and painfully honest life-lessons of artists such as Jacques Brel, Kurt Weill, and Scott Walker. The music is minimalistic but also cleverly layered with intriguing sounds, particularly eerie keyboards and bits of electronics. It is sweeping, intense music with volumes of emotional resonance and a tragic undercurrent. Kasher's songs are inconsolable prayers of lament and resignation, intimate and almost painfully introspective without exactly being overtly insular. And yet there is an overwhelming sense that you are eavesdropping on a two-way conversation with Job-like epic proportions. As the title suggests, the album has nearly religious connotations, and its nine 'novenas' delve into all the shadows and blue hues of nighttime. Dark and icy imagery spots nearly every tune, and even when a subject like the sun is referenced, as on the final "Golden Exit," there is something cold and insidious and wintry about its appearance, as if nothing can thaw Kasher's anguish, nothing can break through the bleakness of his worldview. Novena on a Nocturn, after all, is not about the light; despite the cleverly ironic band name, its purpose is to exorcise all those personal demons that seem to travel in the darkness -- listeners' own individual darknesses.

Miracle Fortress Was I the Wave?

Quote:
When their debut Five Roses came out in 2007, Miracle Fortess were still a largely unknown group. In fact, they weren’t even a group (yet), but rather the solo project of Graham Van Pelt, a member of Montreal dance-pop group Think About Life. Nevertheless, the album quickly struck a chord with the press, making its way onto the Polaris Prize shortlist mere weeks after its release. It struck a chord here, too: Five Roses is, without hesitation, one of this writer’s favourite albums, ever. Its feedback-drenched guitars and '60s pop melodies combined to create something truly special.

So, naturally, after such a long gap between albums, any fan would be apprehensive about something new. Thankfully, despite taking what seemed like forever to come out, Miracle Fortress’ new album Was I The Wave? was worth waiting every second. Whereas the first album owed much to Brian Wilson, the new batch of songs takes more from another Brian. Yes, Brian Eno’s imprint is all over this album, whether it’s one of his vocal works like Another Green World (which Van Pelt takes cues from in the brilliant sequencing of the record, with songs split up by lovely instrumentals), or ambient affairs (opening track "Awe" sounds like a lost cut off of Cluster & Eno).

While Five Roses had more straight up pop songs, Was I... satisfies in other ways. As mentioned before, it's obvious that a lot of care went into the album's song cycle. The album's most challenging (but excellent) songs make up the first half of the album, while all the real earworms start on Side B (think of it as the opposite of David Bowie's Low). Still, it's an effective strategy. As soon as it's done, you're going to want to flip that record and start over, guaranteed.

Maybe my original post was misleading. I was throwing my name in to be paired up with another Ob. I thought the rule was: post that you want to be involved then someone is paired up with you to recommend an album, then each Ob reviews that recommended album?

OK, Stone...I know we both have a shit ton of crossover in our collections. Figured I'd stay away from trying to dig out some punk gem. I'd probably just end up uploading something you've already got if I did that. Figured I'd upload something I think you'll probably dig, that I really dig, and that you're less likely to have lying around. Inspired a bit by that Wayne Raney upload in the sense that it's another one for King Records, although this one also features tracks from its sister Federal label. Without futher ado...how about some down and dirty rockin' bluesy instrumental stuff from 1948-1964, all released on the King and Federal labels:

Honky Tonk! The King & Federal R&B Instrumentals

Hope ya like it.

I didn't know what to expect from this. Nobody described it as "dirty rockin' bluesy instrumental stuff" and I knew it was sides from 1948 – 1964 from the small King and Federal labels, but I’m not real familiar with stuff from this era. And while I'm not a big blues fan much at all, I have been getting into more instrumental stuff lately, so I was curious to hear it.

My first reaction to this the first time through was relief, that it wasn't straight ahead blues (at least not in the style I usually consider to be blues). My second reaction was that some of the tracks were sort of big-bandish (not really my thing), but others were great. On my subsequent times through it, my reaction was a bit different. I still think there are a couple tracks that are pretty weak and sound like a 1940s big band / orchestra, but some of the stuff on this is downright fantastic, especially given the timeframe when it was released. Some of the songs feature the sax a bit too much for my taste, and not surprisingly, I like the ones that feature the guitar better.
There are a couple standouts to me:

(1) Johnny "Guitar" Watson – “Space Guitar”
This track is what you would expect from the name: a spacy surf rock instrumental. And this track really rocks. I was impressed with it, and then I looked up when it was released: 1954. Just amazing this was done that early. Great, great song.

(2) “Washboard” Bill with Mickey Baker and King Curtis – “Washboard Story”
I’m not sure if it’s the tune, the inclusion of a washboard, or the fine guitar playing in this (or a combination, which is likely it), but this track is one I can keep coming back to for more.

The Cal Green and Freddie King tracks are great tunes as well. This is not only an entertaining album, but interesting to hear from a historical perspective as well. I wonder what people’s (the few people that got the pleasure to hear it, anyway) reaction was to something like “Space Guitar” in 1954. This is an album I will definitely listen to more.
Very nice recommendation, dw. Thanks.

Yeah it is unbelievable that this was done in '54. One of the most "progressive" songs of all time.

For the Senator, something that was my favorite of 2009 and still continue to go back and listen. A great ingredient for languid hot summer evenings or grey wet cool fall days.

Quote:
There's two kinds of beach music: the warm Tropicana pop that's built for psyching up the volleyball team, and the introspective dream-pop that's designed for the paler, sadder, chillier ranks of the bikini-clad. Along with Beach House and Grizzly Bear (who recorded their last record at a beach house), this Olympia, Washington trio makes the latter kind of music — all soft waves of reverb, guitar riffs that bleed like watercolors and muffled vocals that echo like they're being projected across the dunes. On their second album, frontman Nicolaas Vart even sings about the ocean (check out “Venice Beach”), but his real soft spot is for the liminal spaces the ocean represents: somewhere between land and water (“Boardwalk Theme”), between day and night (“San Francisco 3AM”), between asleep and awake (“Moon Dreams”). And listening in feels hypnotic: as his voice washes over you in a liquid Ambien haze, extending each syllable sooo looong and sooo sweeeetly, you can feel your head get heavier. Sure, Desolation Wilderness can do upbeat — check the great hula-hooping shimmy of “No Tomorrow” — but they're best in the slow-twinkling glory of ballads that slink along to a classic rhythm: swell and fall, swell and fall, and repeat — just like the tide.
