I think the link came from the old Magiska site. I included a track on my first "Faves of 2011" mix back in March.

Not sure if this has gotten any Obner hype, but it probably should.

Image

I somewhat remember there being some Q And Not U/Georgie James fans here. This is John Davis's new thing, and I think it's his best.

I'm definitely a fan, but found this very rushed and thrown together. It Was Easy from last year is damn near perfect.

Yeah, I had It Was Easy on my top 20 last year. In Blank is a major disappointment to me. No variation, no dynamics, no hooks. Deleted.

I am a fan of both but have not heard either of these albums. Are there links floating around?

Doesn't sound anything like Q and Not U, from what I can tell. From little I know of Georgie James, it's not much like that either. Seems like much more straightforward power pop.

There are 10 or so tracks out of 26 that would be worthy on any mix.

Also, seeing Gillian Welch last night really boosted her new record for me. Surprised not seeing it on more lists. I think Billy might be the only one.

It'll be on mine I think. I'm still digesting it but it gets better with each spin. "Hard Times" is my favorite right now.

I'll be seeing her this weekend. Sold out show at a mid-size venue for here. Guess I shouldn't be surprised, but, well, I was.

FYI, this show was phenomenal. Just her and Dave Rawlings with acoustic guitars. Banjo came at a few times as well as the harmonica but for the most part it was just them and 2 guitars. Easily the quietest, most respectful crowd I've ever experienced at this particular venue. You could hear a pin drop during some of the more hushed songs. For me, this show was like a good home cooked meal for the soul. Cannot recommmend seeing them enough. (Stu, they're playing the Ryman on Dec. 1st)

Setlist:

Tear My Stillhouse Down
The Way It Will Be
The Way It Goes
Rock of Ages
Annabelle
I Want To Sing That Rock and Roll
Dark Turn of Mind
Wayside Back In Time
Tennessee
Red Clay Halo

Set Break

Hard Times
No One Knows My Name
Elvis Presley Blues
Down Along the Dixie Line
Six White Horses
Hear Them All (Dave Rawlings)
Look At Miss Ohio
Caleb Meyer

Encore

Revelator
I'll Fly Away

Encore 2

The Way the Whole Thing Ends
Jackson (Johnny & June)

Glad you dug it. They've been banging out incredible setlists. I really hope a live record or film comes out of it.

Having a love-affair with three records:

Mount Moriah :: Mount Moriah
Mathieu Santos :: Massachusetts 2010
Little Hurricane :: Homewrecker
