I'm driving to Kansas today. To switch things up we're going Bham --> Memphrica --> Springfield, MO.

Aside from Graceland, any recommended stops along the way?

I think the Mid American Meth Cookers Museum might be along that route.

Have a full tank of gas before crossing the bridge into West Memphis. You will not find Lucindas's joy, or yours either.

Central BBQ in Memphis.

Sure you don't want to take a detour off US Hwy 63 to US Hwy 160 to Branson? You can possibly make the 8pm show of 3 Redneck Tenors at the Mansion Theatre or the 8pm Yakov Smirnoff show at the appropriately titled Yakov Smirnoff Theater.

I enjoyed Stax.

St. Genevieve, Missouri was surprisingly cool in a quaint historic kind a way.

Mammoth Spring looked so awesome we almost stopped. Reminded me of the area around Bear Paw a little. We talked about going back there to float the river.

But other than that, we cut a swath of sorriness across the center/west of the south. And drove on some of the emptiest roads I've ever seen. Corridor X is basically an abandoned stretch of highway you might encounter in a post-apocalyptic movie.

i've taken some state highways in MS/AR before and yeah, basically cotton fields, mobile home churches, full neighborhoods of 4th world shacks with prominently displayed hub cap/washing machine collections.

It was shoddy, but relatively clean and well scrubbed like you think The Midwest should be.

I'll give it to Missouri - seen more HUMONGOUS American Flags and "Love It or Leave It AMGERGIKAG Fuck Yeah!" style stickers than I ever do in Aladamnbama.

(But we still have a roughly 30"x40" Confederate Battle Flag right by exit 200 on I-65, hoes)

If you're gonna go and name your kid "Maximilien", then man the fuck up and call him by his middle name, "Robespierre".

Found out on Friday I have three weeks more vacation than I knew about (some weird new calculation - I wasn't asking questions) and I have to use it or lose it.

Sketch, warn the locals to move aside and let a bald man roll through.

New Bourdain vehicle this Fall

Quote:
Coming Soon: The Layover
In this new original series, Anthony Bourdain is back and like you’ve never seen him before. He is high octane, gritty and traveling with a sense of urgency. With only 24-48 hours in each city, he is pressed for time to show viewers the essential “must see" places, people and foods. Bourdain will travel throughout the U.S., Asia and Europe revealing insider tips that only the most seasoned traveler would know. Viewers will be treated to a ringside seat as he quickly gathers local intel, faces the enemy of time and distance, gets off the tired old tourist path and tries something new, all within a matter of hours."The Layover" is slated to premiere in fourth quarter 2011 and will be a 10 episode, one-hour weekly series.

“This is a chance to show viewers the secrets of Tony's traveling routine: cracking open the essence of each city, getting right to the marrow of every experience, and making the most out of every moment. These shows are not only about finding the best of every city, but they're filled with amazing tips and tricks for where to go, where to stay, where to eat, and how to get around -- as only Tony can share them and ZPZ can get them on tape!," said Fred Graver, SVP, Programming & Development, Travel Channel. “This series will inspire the occasional traveler and surprise even the most seasoned traveler."

‘The Layover’ will give viewers a hyper-caffeinated, utilitarian take on the Bourdain travel experience,” said Lydia Tenaglia of Zero Point Zero, the production company that brought you No Reservations. “It’s Tony going straight at a city and showing what he thinks can and should be accomplished in a limited amount of time – brace yourself.”

That's some pretty tame riot response. Looks to me the police calmly dropped back and let the hooligans have the night.

I just spent way too much time reading this blog. Premise is, that the author is a sorority girl who has an ipod with only American Idol, and Glee soundtrack on it. She wants to broaden her musical horizon so she embarks on listening to "1001 Albums You Have To Hear Before You Die" journey.

Her take on Dino Jr's "You're Living All Over Me"
Quote:
So we've got an American alternative band from Massachusetts. Now if there has been any band that felt more "90s" to be lately, it has to be these guys. Dinosaur Jr. uses a lot of simple banjo-like melodies and has a lead singer with a grungy "over it" kind of tone to his voice. The 90s thing was strong in the simpler songs like "Lose" and "Just Like Heaven".
