And just for the record...I'm not weirded out by people getting old and putting on a few pounds. I'm more surprised by the horrible lack of style.

For one, I wouldn't exactly call her a one-hit-wonder. Seriously, she had a pair of very successful albums and another that sold pretty well. And she has a few hits.

I never would have guessed who that was. I had to investigate the page that the image came from to figure it out.

DW is right. Her first two albums sold a combined 10 million copies. The next three after that all sold over a million each.

I'm not really a fan but that's hardly the track record of a 1 hit wonder.

that's fine, but ask 99.99999% of the American population who Sinead O'Connor is they'd say "Oh, she's that bald-head singer who sang "Nothing Compares 2U" and ripped up the photo of the pope."

Even if that were to be true, those same people probably couldn't name a 2nd Nirvana song or more than 2 or 3 Michael Jackson songs or a single Stevie Wonder song so I'm not sure what exactly that all proves. Certainly not that Sinead O'Connor was a 1 hit wonder.

I don't think Sinead is a one hit wonder either, but you are dead wrong on all three of your examples.

Poor execution by you there, billy [/maddogrussovoice]

This angle looks more like her, but the one I saw yesterday, I didn't believe it was her. She's led a wacky life so far.

Oh I know, I'm dead wrong but that was the point. Anyone who only knows Nothing Can Compare to You probably doesn't have a deeper knowledge of Nirvana than Smells Like Teen Spirit but I disagree that 99.9999% only know Nothing Compares to You.

FWIW though, when I typed that, I could only think of three Nirvana songs off the top of my head and about 4 MJ songs. I still own three Nirvana albums but I probably haven't listened to any of them in over 10 years and for some reason can only think of "Rape Me" "Smells Like Teen Spirit" & "Lithium" off the top of my head. I played the heck out of a couple of those albums though which brings me to the even if it's true, its pretty meaningless.

Out of curiousity though, how many Stevie Wonder songs do you think the average joe could name and what are they? I wasn't trying to present that as evidence that people don't know Stevie Wonder but as evidence that the test Stu was applying was meaningless.

I have a bunch of her records. Always dug her, I'd go see her live.

She looks like a really worn out, older Natalie Portman.

Stu's right, Billy. One hit wonder.

One mainstream hit I guess. She was much more than that on the college charts / college radio.

I still spin that first album every six months or so. Damn fine album.

I think you're both right. She's a one hit wonder in the same sense that Patti Smith is a one hit wonder with "Because The Night". Although Patti never had the world wide success of a "Nothing Compares 2 U".

I'd agree with Stu that a collection of mainstream music fans only know her from that one song. Hell, I only know that one and "The Emporer's New Clothes".

I was checking her wiki page and her big album sold 7 million records and she followed it up with an album of jazz standard covers and an album of original material in the same month. Who the hell was her manager? Not surprisingly she was dropped.
