Life & Limb - Collab between Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head. American Strong Ale with a ABV of 10.2%. Very dark and malty. Not the best beer to drink before I walked a half mile to dinner, but still a very solid beer.

Split one of these guys with the wife for the game tonight. I agree with TTG, it's a dark, malty motor oil of a beer, reminds me a little of Bell's Third Coast but without as much alcohol burn.

I also picked up the Ovial Dubbial and Saison from Sierra Nevada's collaboration with the Abbey of New Clairvaux. Did not pop them this weekend but will get to them soon

Sorry. I did some research before-hand, but as I mentioned, this was a family trip where I was the only beer drinker so I couldn't really go chasing places down. I got to the places that were almost literally in our way, and nothing else. And I had a truly incredible time all around, which I don't think would've been the case if I had pissed off the Mrs and bored the toddler to tears hunting down abbeys, much as part of me wanted to.

It might help to have a Belgian restaurant or two in the area.

You know, the label looked the tiniest bit familiar but I was pretty sure I'd never had or seen it recently on a shelf. I know who would have it if anyone did, and they're bicycle distance from home. I'ma have to go find out.

How do you guys feel about people selling beers (like say, a six of Pliny's or a Dogfish Bitches Brew) for ridiculously inflated prices on ebay?

Part of me is like, "well, now I've seen everything", part of me is like "time to get to work and make some money"

I gotta say, the world of beer nerdom is right up there.

I won't do it. No way it would live up to the expectations. To use a music example, it's like back in the mid-90's, I was obsessed with Nirvana for a while there. I bought one of those $30 "RARE" bootlegs. It was fine but it wasn't $30 fine.

I'd rather those beers just stay unattainable and I'll get to them someday. I remember going out to y'alls buddy in Suwanee for Bort's going away party (never can remember his name) and him showing me (and sharing some) of his beer cellar. He had a bottle of the Westvleteren 12. He has ponied up and paid something like $40 with shipping for 2 twelve oz bottles of them. This stuff regularly appears on "Best Beers In the World" lists and usually at #1. He said "don't believe the hype, go get a St. Bernardus 12, it's just as good".

That's how I imagine it is with most of this stuff. Not saying I wouldn't like to get my hands on some Pliny but I also think I've got LOTS of good options here that are equally as good.

Yeah, I can get it regularly here. Hop City has a pretty incredible Belgian section. I've only really scratched the surface with their offerings just because some of it is so obscure. I know the Achel Bruin and the Blond is on the menu at the Porter Beer Bar in Little Five. I'm sure it's available at the Brickstore.

Funny you say that, I just read this article last week about the craft beer "Black Market" ..

http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/food/beers-black-market/2011/09/01/gIQAsL0D7J_story.html

I think going out of your way for something you can't get local, and paying a crazy money is a bit much when so much good stuff is usual available in a local market that is comparable. Now I'm all for a Beer Trade, which I have suggested before on here, but paying 30 bucks for 2 bottle of Blind Pig on Ebay is a bit much.

I've got no problem with it, but I won't buy or sale any beer on Ebay. They aren't really being sold at an inflated price, since that is what the beer geeks are willing to pay and have generally set the going rate as for various editions of certain beers. I have been fortunate enough to try certain beers that friends have obtained through beer trades and travel, and while they many of them are stellar beers, I can honestly admit I could have gone a lifetime without regret about never tasting those beers.
If I had the cash, I would go through Beer Advocate and agree to a Beer trade similar to what the good Cap'n has done for a few people on here. The sender agrees to spend a certain amount of cash on at least six bottles, and gets a package in return from another person worth the same amount of cash. I know a few people who were disappointed by a few of the bottles that were sent to them, but they usually get something they want and haven't tried yet this year.

Bill is the guy's name.

Oh and to clarify, by "get to work" I was thinking more along the lines of "one of the stores I go to has tons of unsold inventory of some of those Dogfish exotics, I should pick a few up and make some cash off of these clowns"

I'm plenty satisfied with my choices without resorting to ebay.

Or even better drink the beers, refill them with water or cheap swill, recap them and sell them on ebay. It seems that anyone you'd dupe would have little recourse since you have to post the disclaimer that you are selling a collectible bottle and that it's not for consumption.

There's new beer places opening here all the time, 2 new brew pubs just this month. Plus, places with literally hundreds of selections, a couple places with upwards of 50 different drafts and liquor stores that take up a city block. I figure if you can't find something to drink in all of that, you've gone off the deep end.

...of course my record buying habits could just as easily be called into question by some, so I'll not be too harsh.

Some more recents:

Goose Island - Sophie, Matilda, Honkers Ale, 312 Wheat
Three Floyds - GumballHead
Southern Tier - Creme Brulee
Unita Brewing - Tilted Smile Imperial Pilsner
Jailhouse Brewing - Mugshot IPA

All the Goose Island's were fantastic. I could drink the Honker's and 312 all damn day. The others are little more sophisticated but they're just so damn delicious. They simply know what the hell they're doing. You Chicago folks are lucky.

First time I'd had anything by Three Floyds and I have to say this may have been the best beer I've had in a while. Citrusy and bright but not overwhelming. No outrageous ABV but all flavor. Gotdamn.

The others I had last Saturday and I have mostly hazy recollection of (I HATE drinking stuff like this whilst a couple past the appreciation point). The Souther Tier I'll never drink again unless it's as a post dinner digestif. Tasted like Butterscotch. Perfect substitute for a dessert, coffee, or whiskey but not while session drinking.

The Tilted Smile was serious. I think it was over 10%. Never had a Pilsner with that much alcohol. Surprisingly drinkable though.

If it's your beer, it's yours to do with as you wish. Where I draw the line though is if someone traded for that beer and then that someone puts it up for sale.

I've never sold, or bought, any beers off of eBay... but, right now, I have four beers that could get me between $300 - $600 each... but that's not why I traded for them in the first place. I want to enjoy them with friends. Still... ...

Ebay and re-selling beer: I wouldn't do it myself, on either end (sell or buy) I don't think, for the same reasons Bloor and Derris listed. Because there's SO much good beer available to me anyway, because it feels like crossing some kind of bad line to go that far, and because in all honesty I've never had a beer I've enjoyed enough to pay more than maybe $10 or $15 for a 12 oz bottle. Having said that if it goes on then good, I guess, as it's interest in craft beer. I don't like it driving up prices, but that's gonna happen if enough people allow it, ebay or not. People drinking more good beer has to be a good thing.

Derris's haul: Glad you feel the same way about the Goose Island stuff. Their regular IPA is also that good, just amazing for a sixpack beer you could drink 15 of. Creamy, almost. Southern Tier is very, very hit or miss for me, mostly miss. They take big chances (a good thing) but they land in wierd places. Three Floyds has nothing really to learn from anybody, they make some spectacular fucking beers in a variety of styles. Their scotch ale and bigger IPA's are not. to. be. missed. And the Tilted Smile from Unita... that looks like they Crooked Line artwork I had last year I think, they are the same brewery right? If so, that was one of the better bottles I had all year, it stood out. I don't know much about them, but this makes me even more curious.

This thread always makes me want a beer at like 9am.

Oh and I'm going to start brewing again. Ideas?

Yeah it's the same brewer and I misspelled it. It's Uinta. I guess they're a private label brewer maybe or it's just their special line of beers.

Also, I read on the bottles of Pepe Nero and Fleur that they yeast will develop for 5 years in the bottle but they're relatively low ABV. Seems like they wouldn't keep for that long.

As for what to brew, I'd go with a stout. Won't it be pretty cold by the time the first batch is ready? Good stout drinkin weather.

Try to recreate a Young's Double Chocolate!

If I had a bottle of beer that anyone was willing to give me 300-600 bucks for...SOLD.

I am looking forward to this weekend at least checking out one if not both of the new brew pubs in town. Early reports so far have been positive. And, at least one of 'em was opened by a guy who used to run a pretty good wine bar that also had a small but really excellent beer selection so I'm betting he'e got the goods.

If you're gonna brew I suggest making some Altbier, really tasty stuff that isn't around nearly enough. A good Alt Sticke just isn't sold at a lot of places, at least around here.

Alts are one of my very favorites. And one of my sweetheart go-to beers up here is an alt sticke, Long Trail's Double Bag. It's in the regular 6 pack price range and packs 7%... great shit.

I like stouts, and they're not complicated, so if I did one I'd have to experiment with a few angles to make it interesting. I wonder if there's a ghetto way to wood age? Like, block planing a few sticks of spanish cedar or french oak or something and letting the beer ferment / age with them for an extra few months...? This could end up absolutely awful. I'm kinda excited.

I was just wondering about them because I saw their Wyld and Sum'r in cans (I think) the other day but didn't associate the name with the Tilted Smile and Detour (I think that's the one you had Cap'n).

Also, I want in on the home brewing.
