Despite rumors of a new studio album early next year, Sony Music decided now is as a good time as ever to immortalize Leonard Cohen’s brilliant 40-year career as an insane 18-disc box set. According to Exclaim, The Complete Albums Collection will compile Cohen’s 17 studio and live albums, from his 1967 debut Songs of Leonard Cohen up to 2009′s live release Songs From the Road. Each CD in the set was remastered from original analogue master tapes and will be housed in a mini-LP replica jacket based on their original artwork. What’s more, the package will also include a 36-page booklet full of “discographical annotations and recording information, as well as a 1,300-word essay by Pico Iyer.

Sony Music will releas the box set on October 11th. A smaller, 11-disc set compiling only his studio albums will also be available on that date. Pre-orders are now ongoing at the musician’s website.

I've got Songs of Leonard Cohen and I'm Your Man. Have always enjoyed those and been curious about the rest of his stuff but really haven't gotten into him enough to wanna wade through 17 albums. Any suggestions as to the gems of his catalog or good compilations to listen to?

Songs of Love and Hate, and New Skin For The Old Ceremony. Really any of his 70s output is good and worthy of your time. Also, if you wanna listen but not read his poetry Book of Longing is intriguing since it is basically Philip Glass scoring LC's writings.

This. I think I own all of his albums other than the live stuff. Everything is good but "New Skin..." is my favorite.

As a side note, I'm not sure what the market for a box like this is. If you don't own anything by him do you really want to start by buying everything he's ever put out? And if you do own a bunch of stuff, do you want to buy a box that has a ton of overlap? I guess it's pretty reasonably priced though.

I guess I'm a targeted buyer in that I own some stuff but not everything. Also, the stuff I have is not remastered and some of it sounds really horrible on systems set up for HDCD. I can't see myself buying it out the gate, but if I saw it used for $80, I'd go for it.

I'll just chime in and say, that of all the Cohen albums I have and have listened to, Songs of Leonard Cohen, Songs from a Room, and Songs of Love and Hate are my favorites. Really, those are the only ones I particularly care for. I don't really like New Skin very much for some reason.
