I don't really see much I agree with there except maybe the predictability of revivalism.

I don't see much that isn't different than what's "killing America in 2011"

What I learned today: Lana del Rey is Gene Simmons, except she had her 'KISS w/o make-up' moment BEFORE she was famous.

Also: didn't one-time Christian Pop singer Katy Perry already pull off the exact bubblegum to indie/punk flavored pop transition like ten years ago?

Of course, I wouldn't expect the people at hipster runoff to know that second part, since they were prolly all of ten years old when "California" -- I think that was the title -- was the pre-whip cream cannon bra Katy Perry song and video.

It's a list of 10 clichés that most commonly enter into discussions on indie music.

And the not trying too hard means unfinished theory was blown by Pavement.

Of course, that's not to say any band can pull it off -- looking at you, Royal Trux -- but it can be done. Sometimes.

even revivalism has played its part underground over the decades

Admittedly I skimmed this, but pretty sure he/she is confusing artists that remain Indie as opposed to those that take the leap to mainstream or complaining that they take that leap. So what, don't buy it then. Life is so hard to be an Indie groupie. After all, with the amount of music out there tons are under exposed or have regional sized audiences.

Yeah I don't think this is the issue the author has at all. Read the opening paragraph (or don't, none of this is particularly worthwhile) and then this:

Quote:
“Selling out” as an accusation has been around for as long as selling out has actually been a possibility. While in the occasional case — The Black Eyed Peas, for instance, or Kings of Leon’s post-Because of the Times left turn towards AOR tedium — it’s justified, it’s largely a load of piffle. We all understand the strange feeling of loss when your favorite band suddenly crosses over into the public consciousness, and they’re not your secret any more. But people have to eat. These days, there seems to be an abiding suspicion of any band that maintains any sort of ambition, be it commercial or artistic. This ties back into the notion that it’s not cool to care about anything; of course, this is fine if you happen to have a heap of money in the bank anyway.

So it's more the opposite. The author is complaining about people who complain about selling out.

I was referring to this though:

Quote:
Indie as fashion statement

And now we come to… Lana Del Rey. . . the sudden wash of coverage on the new princess of Pitchfork hype has little, if anything, to do with her music. . .Gaga as well. . . And yes, there have been many style-over-substance indie artists over the years.

But even so, there’s something depressing and unedifying about the spectacle of someone making such an obvious play for mysteriously bankrolled, image-driven blogosphere success. Del Rey has the vaguely exotic name (much more interesting than plain old Lizzy Grant, . . . . Perhaps the most depressing thing about it all is that there was surely no possibility that she wouldn’t get “found out” — she just didn’t care, and saw indie-dom as nothing more than another potential image to tick off in the search for stardom. Is this how you “succeed” in 2011? God hates us all.

In the first paragraph he writes:
Quote:
And by “indie,” we don’t necessarily just mean music released on independent labels (a term that’s becoming increasingly meaningless these days anyway). These days, “indie” has become similar shorthand to what “alternative” meant in the 1990s Indie.

I get what he is saying, but I almost completely disagree despite Arcade Fire's Grammy. If that's his definition then he can pretty much create his own reality on whatever band fits the definition. As soon as any band gets wide enough appeal it can be lumped in this definition.

If you introduced Kenya's largest bull elephant to an all-you-can-eat hay buffet it still wouldn't be able to produce more shite than that article.

I think indie music is great right now. I mean, there are a lot of knock offs aping the hottest indie sounds, and bands doing some gawd-awful "please use this song in an cell phone commercial" shit, but I can cast a wide net, filter out the shit, and have lots of good stuff to listen to. IMO this wasn't the case 7-8 years ago. The fact that there's a vagillion blogs out there hyping/bashing indie pop/rock/ means the genre is booming again.

1. What Loogar said.
2. I listened to the new Malkmus and The Girls back to back and had the idea that "irony" was something the younger (Girls) eschew in favor of morphine.
3. My country is breaking my heart.
