Oh you're in. You and Neuro have to help me figure out what's worth doing (not boring), but that we can reasonably pull off. I want something pretty high content, and other than I don't have a lot of constraints, except not being able to lager.

I've never done it before so I don't even know how it's done or what to suggest. I'd be down with a stout though.

So let's aim for a high-gravity stout.

If it is worth shipping, I will ship it. If it's not, I will suck it down shamefully in front of the wood-burning stove and plot my next move. You, Derris, Bloor, Toze...

My youngest, Kyle, is fittin' to start home-brewing here very shortly. His mom has gotten into it pretty heavily in the last couple years (even winning a couple awards in the local home brewing, association down in Tampa), and is sending him the necessary eqpt., etc. They both are into porters and stouts, so I imagine that's where he'll be focused. I had a Belgian-style triple Tina made last year, and was pleasantly surprised- it was damn good.

On a beer-related note, if any of you ATL thugs are coming to the FLORIDA-georgia game, you wanna start thinking about whether or not you want get an extra drunkening on at Kickbacks while you're in town. Steve will roll out some special shit for me with nothing more than a phone call a few days in advance.

Are you gentlemen going to all-grain or malt extract homebrew?

I intend on going all-grain. The 25 batches I did back in college were all extract, but it always felt like cheating. I wanna snack on it while I'm working.

Just got back from the store with a mix and match six pack for the weekend. Going to try the Founders Breakfast Stout, Dominion Oak Barrel, and Brooklyn Black Chocolate at some point tonight.

So many beers up here in DC that weren't widely distributed out west, so I have a lot of new things that have grabbed my attention lately.

So, Fall beers have been in my local shop for 2-3 weeks now.

Somebody recommend me a Pumpkin beer.

Shiv: HTF did you get all those for $17? That Sixth Glass alone is $12.

Derris: Only really good one I've had lately is local up here, Cisco on Nantuckett. Even Neuro liked it, and he's picky as hell.

The one that's invisible and not brewed at all.

I'm looking forward to the bocks and, more importantly, the wintertime porters.

If you've never had pumpkin beer I would say "get a sixpack" but it has to be a good one. It's interesting at least once if they don't over-do it.

My absolute favorite is the Wayerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale, hands down. The Dogfish Head Punkin Ale is good too. My girlfriend says that the best is Cambridge Brewing Co's Great Pumpkin and they just started making 22 oz's of it but I don't think you'd be able to find it down there.

They're only 12 oz bottles. Marty's in Newton lets you mix and match bottles and if you make a 6 pack they give you 15% off. Craft Beer Cellar, which is closer to you, lets you do the same thing but their selection isn't quite as good and I don't think they give you a discount.

I only made it through the Sum'r and Double Down and then had half of a 22 of Pretty Things Hedgerow Bitter last night.

New local brew-pub opened last week and got there last night. Five types of beer, a German Wheat, a Bitter, a Rye, a Brown Ale and something they called a British Best which was similar to the bitter but a bit darker. I think I liked the British Best thing most. I liked that they sold it in either 8 oz mugs or 16 oz, with the 8 oz being just half price and not getting an extra charge. Made it easy to sample 'em all even on a weeknight. I must also say, I've always liked draft beer better than bottles so I think I often enjoy the brew pub places better than the places that offer hundreds of bottles to choose from. This makes the 6th new one that's opened here in the last couple years with a couple more scheduled. I see myself spending some serious time at this one due to the quality of the beer, even though they don't do a few of my favorite styles (something I am going to have to talk to the guy about), but even more due to the fact of it opening up a couple blocks from my house.

i've never been too interested in the pumpkin beers, but this one changed my mind:

Image
by uinta brewing, who i've been really digging lately (though i thought the Sum'r that shiv had above was a bit underwhelming). the Punk'n was crisp and just the right hint of pumpkin and spices...a great fall beer. honestly, i probably wouldn't have even picked out the pumpkin had i tasted it blind.

this fucker, also by uinta, knocked my socks off, if you can find it. an imperial black IPA @ 9.2%. just delicious:

Image

the only other notable i had lately i can't even find a picture of. i was fortunate enough to have a buddy returning from Cali bring my a few bottles of Pliny and Blind Pig along with their fall seasonal called "It Takes a lot of Great Beer to make Great Wine". RR's description:
Quote:
There is an old familiar saying in the wine business: "It takes a lot of great beer to make great wine!" Winemakers, cellar workers, and grape pickers alike rarely (if ever) reach for a nice big glass of red wine in the middle of harvest. Wine is quite delicious, but not very refreshing on a hot summer day. The beverage of choice during harvest is BEER! Ice-cold, refreshing and thirst-quenching BEER! The beer in this bottle is a toast to our winemaking friends who work around the clock during harvest to make world-class wine right here in our own back yard! Cheers!

just a great, smooth drinking late summer beer. wish i had more.

That Uinta Dubhe sounds goddamned delicious.

Yeah I saw that Dubhe at the store where I made the sixer. I probably should've gotten that instead of the Sum'r, which was meh.

Update on the "bad Brooklyn beer" fiasco: Was in that part of town today so I popped into Hop City, mentioned it to the guy and he immediately was like, "that was you? sorry I didn't email you back. Get anything you want up to the price of that 12 and it's on us."

I have decided though that HC is not well organized; I prefer Total Wine (or my local place which is just a notch below in terms of selection).

They're trying, I guess.

Side note - collecting swing-top bottles for home brewing is expensive, unless you REALLY like Grolsch. I'm ok with it, but after 5 of them it's already wearing thin.

Why not just buy a capper and a bag of bottle caps?

I finally got around to trying Blind Pig the other day. It's really good and I agree with Duckyboy probably a little better than Pliny.

I did caps the last two eras I brewed. It's ok but I like the idea of not needing them this time. Just something different to try.
