You got Revolver.
You got Pet Sounds.

And you got:

The first really big leap forward for songwriting for the band. In my mind this is the album that put them squarely into the same league as the two bands mentioned above. Every song on the album was a winner. (With, maybe the exception of the opening cut.)
Too obvious?

Another obvious one. But maybe not even as obvious as The Kinks. But as far as the title of the thread goes:
Yes, you should hear this.

Loud, amateurish garage ROCK.
This was the sound of punk to come. The MC5, before there was any MC5.

Ike & Tine Turner: River Deep, Mountain High

Ike & Tine + Phil Spector = fantastic album. The title track is considered by Spector as his greatest track ever.

Damn, I'm posting a lot. But it's just so easy to find great stuff from this year.
Here is another band that is kinda kindred spirits with The Sonics, but more twisted and weird. Like if the 13th Floor Elevators were taking different drugs. Weirder drugs.

The Supremes: I Hear a Symphony

Probably my favorite full length by the Supremes. The title track, A Lover's Concerto and more. Nothing really sounds like filler here.

Paul Revere and the Raiders: Midnight Ride

Laugh away, but Kicks is a great song, this album has the first version of Stepping Stone, and the whole thing is a great example of early garagey rock 'n' roll.

AllMusic Wrote:
This album found Q 65 at their peak, and this reissue adds six strong bonus tracks to the original 12, including their first two singles, "You're the Victor" and "The Life I Live." Q 65 were among only a handful of non-English speaking bands of the mid-'60s whose talent rivaled second-tier groups such as the Pretty Things in the search for a rock-oriented update of Chicago blues. What set them apart, and what makes Revolution very reminiscent of Back Door Men by the Shadows of Knight, is the broad range of music performed above and beyond the basic R&B. The band played acoustic as well as hard psych numbers along with the standards, and experimented with harmonium and other instruments to make Revolution more interesting than the average garage release. Despite the eclecticism, their blues interpretations work best, from the nice take of "Spoonful" to the groundbreaking 13-minute cover of "Bring It on Home," the real missing link between the rave-ups of the Yardbirds and the post-Cream jam bands of the late-'60s. Not every move is successful, as a few numbers are derivative, and vocalist William Bieler's language barrier sounds clumsy at times. Like many great bands of that era, Q 65 peaked in 1966-1967, and then fell into disarray after Bieler was drafted, never again reaching the heights of Revolution. Start with this, or the harder-to-find Complete Collection (1966-1969), for a surprisingly consistent set of songs by a group you may have assumed to have only been one-hit wonders.

Frank Zappa/The Mothers of Invention - Freak Out!
I think I like Zappa less and less after this album, but this is just incredible. For its time, especially.

The Monks - Black Monk Time
This is just one of the most fun albums ever made.

How awesome is it that while the Beach Boys and Beatles are embarking on the road to drug-fuelled, overindulgent, concept wankery (granted the Beatles only truly achieved this in '67), Mick and Keef write what might be the best straightforward rock and roll album ever made.

The more I look art this era, the more Motown ruled this year for my tastes.

Take out the "concept" part, and Aftermath isn't all that different, at least in terms of the adjectives you're using here.

They're all good albums, anyway, and the whole taking sides bullshit between Brian Wilson-type orchestrated pop and "real rock and roll" is completely retarded.

Anyway, carry on!

More great jazz from 1966:

John Coltrane - Meditations
Cecil Taylor - Unit Structures
Albert Ayler - Spirits Rejoice
Lee Morgan - Cornbread

Meditations is my favorite jazz album.
