berliner, I did some checking here and the decision here to allow for teleworking was based on getting our LEED certification.

If you aren't familiar with LEED:

The current building we are in was built in 2004 and met enough requirements to be Silver certified.

I know we report all teleworking hours either by month or year and we also factor in each individual's commute to calculate how much we reduced our carbon footprint.

This is done to maintain our certification. So, it's definitely a business interest issue but it also is a perk that everyone who does it enjoys. Win win situation.

spontaneously I'd say this is how politics work, especially for somehow social related issues. I think it's actually a good idea to connect these tasks, the economical logic is working in short terms and doesn't really care for long term positive social changes. which is okay and political business.
