more like MEGAimpact. can't even begin to think where my life would be without Apple (career/personal).

RIP Jobs, a true visionary.

Seriously though, his impact on technology and culture in general is pretty fucking incredible.

He didn't invent mp3s or downloading music, but he popularized and legitimized them. I used to dream of carrying all my music in a pocket, and now I can thanks to his vision.

RIP Steve

I had a Mac laptop when I went to college in 1995. When I joined the cmj board in 2004 I was probably still one of the only users posting from a Mac.

Jobs took over the world faster than Karl Rove took over the South for Repubs.

I was oddly moved... moist eye stuff. It's like he was a combination of Thomas Edison and Bob Dylan.

I remember my dad got our first computer when I was ~8. It was a then-new Macintosh LC II.

Although that was our first computer, perhaps the most fun I had on a computer was an older model. I forget exactly what it was exactly, but it looked something like this:

I spent hours on that machine playing whatever shareware/freeware games were available.

Anyway, I've never really converted to being a Windows user. I can do it--and Microsoft is savvy enough to make their recent OS's fairly intuitive as well. But only at the office. I still use my Macs for me-time.

RIP Jobs.

Let's not get carried away. The guy had an excellent business model, but Edison (named as an inventor on 1093 patents) or Dylan he was not, let alone a combination of the two.

The very first Mac - the first and only home computer I had growing up. We bought it right when it came out, when fucking nobody had a home computer. I used to have to ask each new elementary school teacher every year if it was ok if I typed my homework. The best was when they would have us write a list of like 30 words 20 times each for homework, and the teacher didn't know about ctrl+c / ctrl+v. I wrote all my high school papers on that beast.

That's been my sentiment today. The fact that so many people are quoting him, changing profile pics, etc is pretty crazy.

Well people would do that for musicians and actors and stuff if they were big enough, so why not Jobs?

I mean yeah the Cult of Apple is pretty ridiculous, but this guy just had a very tangible impact on all of our lives.

David Weder has 1321 patents. There is no question we'd have the light bulb had Edison not lived. There's no question we'd have the personal computer and smart phone had Jobs not lived. But history is what it is. The man who built the world's most successful business and has influenced every hour of how we live in the 21st century never graduated from college, took acid, and fucked around in his parents' garage and changed the world. I'll stand by my perception of his significance; cultural, economic and paradigmatic.

Especially since Jobs didn't invent either of those products. He was a great business mind and technological innovator, but his role as an inventor has been completely overblown.

That said, a lot of his speeches that have been quoted in the last 24 hours are really inspiring.

Maybe he didn't write those, either.
