Jan Jelinek: Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records
Minimal techno. If the title makes you expect any recognizable jazz sounds cropping up throughout this one, you'll be disappointed. I've read that the sounds used for this were culled from old jazz records, but by the time they come back at you here they are completely unrecognizable as such. If you're interested in glitchy minimal techno though, this is quite good.

Just started listening to this guy after picking up a different CD on Friday. That one was a live collaboration with Computer Soup called Improvisations And Edits, Tokyo 26.09.2001 and sounds a lot more like the title of this one would lead you to believe as it does indeed work some mellow jazz horns into the mix. It's also a lot more sparse and floating. I may like it better but not sure yet. Just getting to know this guy even though he's been around a long while so interested in anyone else's take on his stuff.

How is that M83? I really liked Dead Cities but have been less enamored of their other ones.

it's no Dead Cities. One of the duo, Nicolas Fromageau, left after that record and they haven't been the same under Anthony Gonzalez's sole helm.

Handsome Furs' Face Control. Man, this takes me back to my Orchestral Manoevres in the Dark days.

Image

Quote:
The Montreal-based duo Handsome Furs formed in 2005 around the talents of Vancouver transplants Dan Boeckner (frontman of Wolf Parade) and Alexei Perry. The husband-and-wife team released the atmospheric Plague Park in 2007, utilizing drum machines and world-weary melodies to distinguish the band's debut from Wolf Parade's own output. Plague Park earned accolades for its electronic twist on indie rock, with Rolling Stone likening the band to "a dingy version of the Cure rocking some hipster dive bar," and the growing buzz prompted Handsome Furs' return to the studio in late 2007. Despite initially planning to cut an EP, the inspired duo recorded an entire album instead, drawing upon its recent Eastern European tour for lyrical cues. The resulting Face Control was issued in March 2009. For their 2011 follow-up, the band turned to Asian influences, and recorded Sound Kapital with only keyboards and drum machines.

Similar to their 2007 debut, Plague Park, the Handsome Furs' sophomore effort is super moody and a little on the brainy side. Named after a practice common to upscale Russian nightclubs in which people are admitted based on physical attractiveness, Face Control places itself in a stark, scrubby, post-Soviet Russian landscape. And for anyone interested in that level of listening, Dan Boeckner and Alexei Perry's haunting Russian storylines will hold some interest. That said, the braininess of this album isn't the main attraction. At its core, Face Control showcases the Handsome Furs' wonderful way with song. The album feels weirdly familiar, full of gritty hooks that conjure up Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty -- you could call it computerized roots rock. "Talking Hotel Arbat Blues," for all its rumbling, computerized bells and whistles, is built on a downright prehistoric rock riff, the one behind songs like "Summertime Blues." Getting back to basics like this is a radical move, and there are times when Face Control has problems getting out from under the shadow of Springsteen. But most of the time this newfangled approach to howling, heartfelt rock & roll feels really, really good. Rollicking, fire-slicked tracks like "Evangeline," "All We Want Baby," and "Radio Kalingrad," with their gorgeously dark underpinnings, make it clear that Face Control makes good on all the promise Plague Park had to offer. For an album set in Russia and made by an artsy indie rock duo from Montreal, Face Control feels shockingly down-home American -- the kind of music that would normally find its home in crumbling Rust Belt towns. Barring all that, it's just a solid album, and just another example of Boeckner and Perry's tingling creative chemistry.

Misfits: Devil's Rain

Jerry Only is back with Dez from Black Flag on guitar and the guy from Murphy's Law playing drums. You probably know if you'll like this or not before hearing a note. It's more polished than classic Misfits, but it's also less catchy and Jerry's voice isn't as good as Glenn, lacks a bit of pace as well. I'll have fun listening to this a few times I'm sure, but I can't really say I expect to keep returning to it after a quick couple listens for kicks. If I feel like listening to modern Danzig-less Misfits, I'll still probably go back to that Misfits1950 cover album over this.

I kept up with the post-Danzig Misfits for awhile, mostly because I had a college friend who was obsessed and had the biggest collection of rare/bootleg Misfits stuff I've ever seen. Famous Monster was probably the last I made any stride to hear them.

I might have to see if this is on Spotify. Mostly because I've been on a Misfits kick since I found my boxset which was lost in my apartment for 2 years (don't ask).

When I wrote a punk zine back in high school, I remember reaching out to Bobby Steele and him really helping me out with an interview and then connecting me with people. His record under the Undead moniker, "Dawn of the Undead" still resonates in my head every so often.
