From when MTV had at least a couple of cool things.
Arguably, the best thing ever aired on Unplugged:

Also cool: Jerry Springer having a hot co-ed in a bikini roll around in honey and feathers on stage.

Edit: Sorry, Todd. And the rest of you can piss off.

Was that on Unplugged?

LL Cool J doing "Mama Said Knock You Out" was the only other performance that I could think of as being as good as the SRV thing.

Really? I wouldn't even put that in the top 50 Unplugged moments. The first thing that comes to mind is the REM one which, ironically, was filmed the same day as the LL Cool J performance. That must have been a weird green room.

The opening to Alice in Chains MTV Unplugged always gave me chills...

I think Layne was found dead several moths later...

Klosterman's Grantland podcast this week hosts a pretty decent academic conversation about the influences of (and on) MTV in its heyday.

Fixed, but yeah I liked it, too. I preordered the book too, so I guess ultimately it succeeded on a number of levels.

My only complaint was that it wasnt nearly long enough.
