Another not-so-good year in my opinion. Prove me wrong!

Uncle Tupelo: March 16-20 1992
By far my favorite Uncle Tupelo. Great songs in a sparse setting.

Image
Aphex twin: Selected Ambient Works 85-92
Stone cold classic of electronic music, one of the best albums of its ilk ever released.

Dr Dre: The Chronic
Talk about a game changer, this thing changed hip hoop forever. I personally tend to think it changed hip hop for the worse, but still it was a massive and hugely influential album. And it sounded fantastic. Couldn't go anywhere without hearing this thing when it came out.

Probably not a spectacular year for depth but some really great highlights.

True, it is the weakest of their studio output. Nonetheless, their first album in 14 years is a pretty damn good, tightly wound guitar record that contains all the signatures of the band's sound from the 70's. Both guitar players sound great and the interplay is as tight as it ever was. Witness:

Yes on Uncle Tupelo, Pavement, FNM, and The Pharcyde.

This is my favorite Jesus Lizard album, by a small margin:

Liar

...and probably my favorite album of the year, just above Pavement.

The Jayhawks - Hollywood Town Hall
Their best album. Rock-solid, top-to-bottom, filled with great songs, great playing, and great harmonies. Yeah, I know that, these days, they fall squarely into the "Dad Rock" category, but in '92 they were still at least a little bit underground-ish.
You know what? Fuck it, a great song is a great song, and this album had a lot of them!

92 was kinda a weird year. The previous year was such a gigantic year for shifting music, that the next year was still being driven essentially by those releases. Looking back, these are the albums (and some above mentioned) that I still listen to. I remember Blind Melon and Black Crowes were big too. That Mudhoney record was probably bought by almost everyone, because it ended up being a record that was in every single cheap, used bin.

Beastie Boys - Check Your Head
The band surprised a lot of people by picking up their instruments again and fusing their punk past with the hip hop thing that they made their fortune on. And it fucking worked! IMO, this is their second best album, behind only Paul's Boutique. But not that far behind.

Actually I'm going to go ahead and disagree with myself and say that this was a really good year, definitely better than '90 and '91.

Dogbowl - Flan
I know that NOBODY is going to agree with me on this one, but it happens to be one of my favorite records of the year. From a former member of King Missle, Dogbowl is actually Stephen Tunney, and this record is a concept record, based upon an equally weird novel that he wrote, himself. So weird, and yet so tuneful. Love it.
(Can only find a live video, and nothing of any studio recordings, so this will have to do.)

Yes on Uncle Tupelo (my favorite from them also), Pavement s&e, and Sonic Youth

Chris Bell - I am the Cosmos

was actually first released in 1992 but recorded in 1977. Great but questionable whether you really consider it 1992.

Other favorites:

Image

Maceo Parker - Life on Planet Groove

Fantastic Live Soul/Jazz/Funk from James Brown's former band leader and sax player.

Morphine - Good

Alejandro Escovedo - Gravity

His best

Garland Jeffreys - Don't Call Me Buckwheat

Jules Shear - The Great Puzzle

Probably my favorite album from 1992 and his best. Production sounds a little dated but the songs are great.

The Vaselines - the Way of the Vaselines

Leonard Cohen - the Future

Loudon Wainwright III - History

The Saw Doctors - All the Way from Tuam

Julian Cope - Jehovahkill

My favorite of his

Willy Deville - Backstreets of Desire

Really strong album from Mink Deville front man

Richard Shindell - Sparrows Point

Pretty good folk album and his best

Cesaria Evora - Miss Perfumado

Probably her best

Sublime - 40 oz to Freedom

I might be the only fan here but I enjoy the hell out of this album.

Ride - Going Blank Again

I was a big fan of this in 1992 than I am today but I can still appreciate it.

Jesus & Mary Chain - Honey's dead

So I'm going to have to disagree again that it wasn't a good year

Shrimp Boat - Duende
I had to get this one in, eh?
Believe it or not, it actually took me a little bit to get into this one. It was in rotation at the station where I was DJing in college, but I was just lukewarm on it. Played it dutifully whenever it came up in rotation on my shift. Then, one shift, I played "River of Wine" and something clicked. I liked it. Didn't love it, but liked it enough to buy the record. Over the next few months, I played that record increasing amounts until I was near obsessed with it.
But, that last part you knew already.

Stump the Host - California Zephyr/World's Greatest Liar
The husband/wife team of Steve Dawson and Diane Christiansen are currently known as the leaders of Chicago alt-country outfut Dolly Varden. But, before that band was formed, they had another project together called Stump the Host. This 7" single was, sadly, their only release, but it's a great one. The A-side was re-recorded with DV, but frankly, I think that this one is the superior version. The B-side is a pretty good tune in and of itself, but it isn't quite in the league of its flip.
(Currently searching for some sort of stream of the StH version. In the meantime, here is Dolly Varden doing the same song, live.)

Jonathan Richman - I, Jonathan
On any given day, this could be my favorite JoJo record. But then, it might not be. No matter what, it is a great collection of typically Jonathan tunes, including the now "classic" (among Jonathan fans) "I Was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar".
