I might be the only fan here but I enjoy the hell out of this album.

I'm with you here. I know it got way too popular with the 'wrong' people and a lot of people just reject it out of hand because of that, but musically this is a really good album. I don't listen to it often, but I still enjoy it when I do hear it.

I used to have that on cassette.

I still feel like I never need to hear that band again, but maybe that'll change someday.

big yes on the uncle tupelo, pavement, sonic youth, spiritualized, lemonheads, buffalo tom, catherine wheel, ride and jesus and mary chain mentions. that julian cope has been a recent favorite of mine too.

some other important ones to me back in the day that still get play:

gotta throw this one in too, because i'm playing it now and it's worthy of a mention even if it's not a proper "album" but rather a collection of singles released once per month that year:

Congregation is the second best Afghan Whigs album. That's saying a lot considering that I adore them.

I went thru my Discogs collection (damn I have a shit-ton of 12"s from that year) and found these:

Also good calls:
Ride
XTC
Sonic Youth
Sugar
House Of Love
Charlatans UK
Afghan Whigs

The Fleshtones "Powerstance" is my numero uno for this year...nice call Rads. They were more than on top of their live game at the time too. I'm still waiting for them to record they're send-up of Soupy Sales' "Do The Mouse". BTW, for anyone that's interested, Peter Zaremba has begun selling items from his record collection on eBay.

Aces also on the Weddoes Hit Parade...the covers from that series are out of this world...both in selection and execution.

I'll add this one:

Image
I can't get enough of the double-entendre in "Background Affair".

Also, even though there's no picture, John Otway released a covers album that's pretty good. If you're familiar w/ Otways' work and like it, then you'll dig it.

Pretty sure this hasn't been mentioned yet. One of my favorites from the year.

Sloppy, lo-fi garage rock.

Pale Saints - In Ribbons

Just came a cross this album recently, I'd recommend it to anyone who's a fan of shoegaze.

I'm not crazy about TMBG, but I had that album back in the day and loved it. I was visiting family in Massachusetts, and my cousin was playing that album. "Someday mother will die and I'll get the money" cracked my 11 y/o ass up, and the first thing I did when I got back was run out and buy that album.

Loved that TMBG. The two albums after that were pretty good, before they fell apart.

Others from that year:

Nine Inch Nails - Broken

Possibly their best release.

James - Seven

Britpop with yodeling!

Ned's Atomic Dustbin - Are You Normal?

+1 on so many of these: Sugar (still my #1 ever), R.E.M., Pharcyde, Beasties (my fave of theirs), Ministry, Pantera, Faith No More, Screaming Trees, L7, Afghan Whigs, Jesus and Mary Chain.

I can't deny Dre's influence, but the keys on the Chronic track drive me nuts.

Sorry if I missed these in the thread:

This reminded me that I saw the most random double bill that year with them touring on the strength of "Dizz Knee Land" and opening for these guys:

Which also came out in 1992. Saw them at Center Stage in Atlanta (I was living an hour away at the time) and Izzy was not 6 months removed from Guns N Roses. Despite being sober at that point, they played with bongs all over the stage.

For me, this is easily the best Guns N Roses member related album. Great rock n roll record released at the height of the Grunge explosion.

Bongwater - The Big Sell Out
Everything this band did was at least worth hearing, whether you liked it or not, there was always something that would get you thinking or smiling or reacting in some way. This was their last record and their most "normal." "Normal" being a relative term.

I guess that this came out in '92, too. I thought that it was '91, but...

Used to play this on my radio show and loved it.
Big, dumb, stupid punk rock. In the best possible way.

Overall, it's an uneven collection, but it does have what it probably my favorite MI song:
