One question: what on earth does John Bush of AMG (and presumably others) hear in this steaming pile that would make it worthy of 4 1/2 stars out of 5? Seriously.

It's great. The problem is you.

I hear: music. Fun songs. The more whimsical and playful side of prog that I actually like. Not taking itself too seriously. Exploring, fucking around. Finding some genuinely exciting sounds in the process. I'm willing to put up with a certain amount of self-indulgence if it yields some rewards at some point, which I think this does.

Pretty funny/arbitrary that you would decide to get upset about a fairly low-key album like this more or less out of the blue.

Looks like the new record will be on Matador.
A free mp3 link (A-side) can be found at http://www.matadorrecords.com/matablog/ ... ts-domino/

I'm sorry. I didn't know I was supposed to like 4-minute drum solos and psychedelic keyboard noodling. I'll try to do better.

I'm not sure what you expected?

It's psychedelic jazz-influenced prog rock from the late '60s. I feel like just reading that description should allow you to conjure up the sound of Soft Machine in your head before you've ever even heard a note from them. You read reviews first and were honestly surprised that this is what it sounds like? What made you think you should check it out in the first place? Do you like anything else that's even remotely like it?

I like that Kylesa album a lot, too.

I need to hear some of their older stuff. And I guess I should check out Baroness, too?

I really don't see a LOT of similarity between Kylesa and Baroness, other than geography.

I'm just getting into older Kylesa and from what I gather (so far), it's a lot rawer & not as much melody as SS. Guess that's why i didn't jump on their band wagon sooner, although I'm going back and picking up the other 3...

Baroness, I appreciate, but can't get into for whatever reason...

Yeah I guess geography is the only reason I link the two.

I consider myself a pretty big STP fan, at least of the first three albums, despite critical disdain. I downloaded this mainly for shits and giggles. Well, no shits, but plenty of giggles. Great tracklist, but it's comical to listen to him do these classics faithfully.

Maybe he was like me and went backwards from Robert Wyatt into the Soft Machine catalog. I get what you are saying and I felt like I should have known better afterward but I do like Robert Wyatt Solo but not Soft Machine.

I'm a bigger fan of Baroness' Blue Album over the Red Album. This is the first Kylesa I've heard. Dig melodies
