A bit fried from an overly long and late weekend so something appropriately droney and spacey seemed like a good idea. This is hitting the spot. Heavily processed guitar and synth sounds to zone out to. Heavy Eno influence. You can listen to everything this guy's done on his Bandcamp site if you click the pic above.

I think I have all of these except the Tom Waits and the Sun Ra. Much more overlap than the typical drinky day. I really dig that don cherry and junior wells.

Yeah, Symphony for Improvisers and Hoodoo Man Blues are awesome!

The Tom Waits is really good. I'd say it's easily his best since Mule Variations, but that kind of starts to sound like the tired claim made every time an older artist releases a new album. I really think that it is that good, though.

If you like late-'70s Sun Ra (like Lanquidity), then you'd probably like that one.

Spotify has the 5-disc version. Now entering the 34 cuts of Heroes and Villains.

I love "Heroes and Villains" but I couldn't take 34 takes of it in one (or even a few) sitting(s).

I spun this once:

The Lords of Altamont - Midnight to 666

Straight forward garage rock, but pretty well done. It's fairly melodic and enjoyable.

Man, this has been tickling my ears lately. I want to say who it sounds like to me*, but that would turn everyone here off. Snobby bastards.

Quote:
There aren't that many guitar bands that can incorporate elements of synth pop without starting to sound like a synth pop band, and even fewer that can incorporate elements of dubwise reggae without starting to sound like a wannabe reggae band. But the Exit has done the seemingly impossible -- taken familiar elements and combined them into something that's not so much unique as uniquely personal and smart, and yet immediately accessible. Even when the band's influences are less than fully digested ("Back to the Rebels" sounds like Counting Crows doing a cover version of "Watching the Detectives"), the result feels more like a creative collage than a derivative cut-and-paste. One of the things that makes this album so satisfying is the way it builds slowly to its climax, a gorgeous and emotionally powerful song called "So Leave Then," on which a slightly dislocated rhythm supports a heart-on-the-sleeve melody and unabashedly immediate three-chord guitar (and even a few bars of make-believe steel drum). It's hard to put a finger on what makes this album so special, but you'll get it when you hear it. Highly recommended.

Hate odd, what's this like? I've seen it at Rasputin's for $2, and have wondered about it. Is it worth picking up?

"Hate odd"
"Hey, Todd"
I get it!

Think classic CSN crossed with Syd's Pink Floyd and the Grateful Dead.
If that sounds good to you, it's worth picking up.

Real Estate - Days: I have never sat down and listened to these guys before this, and I have to say, I am liking this way more than I thought I would. Seriously catchy stuff.

Mississippi Records Tape Series Vol. 30

Mississippi Records Tape Series Vol. 18

Mississippi Records Tape Series Vol. 81

I have run across a few volumes of this series the past couple of months and am now dead set on tracking down the entire series. A lot of weird stuff was happening in these songs that I have never paid attention to before. Good stuff, cool series. I guess it got a lot of coverage all over the blog world last year but I paid it no attention.

I downloaded a couple of those and promptly forgot about them. IIRC, they can all be downloaded from a single site.

I found a bunch of them on the Root Strata site, but would like to track down the hard copies. The few I have grabbed I found at a used store here in DC, guessing someone from out west moved here and unloaded them down there, probably won't find any more there, but that is what the internet is for I guess.
