Given what's been taking place in the showers at Happy Valley, might it be more appropriate for the words Penn State to be flip-flopped?

"Following protocol" isn't enough when boys are getting raped, and the authorities aren't contacted.

Let's not gloss over the fact that it appears he started a mongering factory charity to "mentor" kids....in 1977

JoePa and all involved have got to know this is the end - and it shits all over everything. All those glowing profiles like the one in Esquire last year will now have to have a Stalinesque "wipe" where they add an addendum about the poo-poo scandal.

In hindsight you can say that, but in most educational facilities teachers, coaches, etc are to report instances of child abuse/assault/etc to a higher authority and then they go to the police. I'm not endorsing actions at all, but from looking at how things usually work in schools he probably did the correct set of steps. Most people would take it for granted that a rape allegation/witness account would be immediately to the authorities without following up on it.

And, don't get me wrong--the people who were supposed to call the police and covered this up...completely messed up and where the system broke down.

Its just messed up all around. Unfortunate for the boys involved that their flives now have to include and deal with this.

I'm with you until, say, 6 months down the road after the incident. You're (for example) Joe Pa. You know what the guy almost certainly did, and you know that nothing has happened about it... it clearly hasn't been reported. THERE IS NO excuse at that point to just shrug and be done with it... the guy is out there fucking kids. Trying not to just think as a dad here, but come on. If you know, or even have REALLY GOOD reason to suspect that someone's ruining kids' lives like that and it hasn't been investigated, you are directly culpable for every subsequent life ruined.

No?

Agreed. I'm reading more and more as the morning goes on. I can't reiterate enough that I absolutely think the act is vile of vile.

One of the problems that I've seen in a few articles now is what constitutes "hearsay". Any law people wanna clear this up. If Joe Pa went to the police, and told them--would they investigate? Could they investigate based on "Someone told me this occurred"? I'm reading different interpretations.

As I read more and more as the morning wanes on, its not looking good for Joe Pa.

Yes, and yes... and the media is going ape-shit over the Touched book right now. Said charity released their own press statement whatever that's worth. PA Attorney General is holding a press conference at 1pm EST.

Per JoePa's culpability, you can weave a believable narrative to blame him for anything post '99. My unsubstantiated take on this is that Joe and Jerry had a chat about the 1998 investigation while it was happening. I suspect Jerry pleaded innocence to Joe's face, which Joe probably didn't take at face value but couldn't prove otherwise. Joe offered Jerry a gentleman's way out (resignation and emeritus status) and possibly told him to get help. From that point on, he's culpable. Given that setup, though, I would have expected Joe to throw the hammer down in '02 when McQueary walks into his house, but he didn't...

I agree with Kyle....but all JoePa apologists should consider that apparently homeboy was taking kids on trips to bowl games, and was using the athletic facilities as late as, oh, last week (allegedly)

Oh man, he literally wrote the book "Developing Linebackers The Penn State Way"

This thing gets much worse before it gets better.

The biggest loser in this, outside of State College? Yahoo! Sports.

All that time invested in bringing down Reggie Bush, then Tressel, for small fry amateurism violations, while Sandusky's interest in immatures hid in plain sight.

Hahahahahah.

The only thing that could make this worse for Yahoo! would be Donna Shalala eating a traditional Lebanese meal, then microwaving the resulting feces in the Yahoo! break room.

And running overnight camps for kids up until a few years ago.

Don't worry, I heard Dan Wetzel on Finebaum yesterday upholding the Yahoo Sports policy of proclaiming guilt before all of the facts come out.

Wetzel will pretend like he's been working on this story for years and was told to hold off by the police.

Media planning to attend Tuesday’s Penn State Football weekly teleconference are advised that the primary focus of the teleconference is to answer questions related to Penn State’s Senior Day game with Nebraska this Saturday. Head coach Joe Paterno and any Penn State Football student-athletes in attendance will be answering questions about the Nebraska game, Penn State’s season thus far and other topics related to the current college football season.

How many Sandusky questions and blow-offs will it take until a reporter actually asks a question in this area? Five?
