Fair enough. I did not know these things and I'll stand down.

Shit dude, I didn't know we were going to have a Tim Russert moment--you still my dog.

And k: That's all I was looking for was a bit of discussion; i had no idea that SW had actually toured with or said shit about MGMT--i'm just a guy who likes their record and have heard some other things that remind me of MGMT. Seemed like an interesting topic and I'm glad you've given it some thought.

FTR, the SW record blows away both MGMT records for me but that's a whole 'nother story i guess. :)

I'm in the "don't really hear MGMT in Smith Westerns crowd". That being said, it's hard to refute the argument with the above evidence.

Smith Westerns are copping 90s indie-rock, right?

I'll throw Animal Collective into the ring as well, alongside Derris' LCD Soundsystem. Electronic influenced, upbeat pop music is popular with the kids these days.

I think you guys are confusing "influenced" and "sounds like".

I guess they've had reasonable crossover as well. I had a non-music friend mention them to me awhile back when 'Time to Pretend' was out.

For me, I just never really connected with them. Same with the LCD Soundsystem.

I guess it depends on which way your radar cone is pointed. Back in 2008, which seems like yesterday but is now nearing 4 years ago, the Vivian Girls were doing their thing (which, as with other bands mentioned here, is similar to some other thing that some other band was doing 10-20 years ago). Nowadays there are dozens of acts mining the same sound - femme fronted, lo-fi-on-purpose, jangle fuzz pop.

Music is all so fragmented now. I think it's for the better, but at the same time, even a music geek like myself can't think big picture enough to say what band is the biggest influence.
