Great topic. Agreed with Bright Eyes and Oasis.

Certainly their best, but Nia has a lot of great moments.

Pietasters - Willis
Lots of energy and hooks with just enough soul to separate themselves from the mid-90s ska-punk pack.

I guess I could say the first Oasis album (Definitely Maybe) and the first Foo Fighters album. Not that I really care too much about either of those anyway.

There are probably better examples, but I can't think of any right now.

I'm a fan too. Is that really their only album that you like?

I think "Willis" is better than anything they recorded after it but I like their earlier albums "Comply" and "Oolooloo" just as much if not more.

I like their other stuff, but I find myself always going back to Willis, so in a sense it's the only one I felt I've needed.

So are you saying you don't like other Matthew Sweet albums or that you've just never heard anything else by him? Because if it's the latter I don't think that's really the point of this thread.

Isn't the topic of the thread about albums we dig from artists that we don't give a damn about the rest of their catalog? Matthew Sweet, other than the Girlfriend song, never really grabbed me, but a friend at work played the album enough that it grew on me. I never saw the need to dig deeper into other albums if it they were going to take months to grow.

I mean, I used to be a huge Clapton fan. Tried to own everything that he ever did. But, as time went on, it became clear to me that pretty much every album he released wasn't too good; just a few good tunes scattered here and there.
But Layla...
Layla is a truly brilliant record (only one song that I don't really like). And it still sounds great to me.

And until just this year, I would say that the only Bangles record that I liked was their debut (All Over the Place).
But now, the new one is right up there, too. So that makes 2.

Their sound is just so basic, so consistent, that I don't feel like I ever need to hear anything else that they've ever done. Although I may be missing out, I don't feel like I am.

substitute White Light... for this, and this is my stance

I dunno Timmy...I think the spirit of the thread is that only liking one album by an artist implies that you don't like the others not that you never gave them a chance. At least that seems to be how everyone else is interpreting it.

I could contribute Mood for Moderns S/T but I kind of figured that since they only had one album, it wasn't particularly in the spirit of the thread either.

I don't even like that one anymore although it's by far the best thing they've ever done.

A few more-

Blood Sweat & Tears - Child is the Father to the Man (after Al Kooper left = Bleech)
Chicago - Chicago Transit Authority (don't love this but it's worth owning, rest = meh to terrible)
Big Audio Dynamite - This is Big Audio Dynamite (really good debut, some good songs after but no good albums)
Fishbone's debut ep
Frame - Dance the Devil (the rest bore me to tears)
Beulah - Yoko (this is probably the strongest example to me)

Lots more if I were to ignore bands where I at least in theory like other albums but ALWAYS reach for my favorite (Source Codes & Tags for example)

Thought about posting this, too.

Honestly, though, I think Before the Dawn Heals Us is a pretty good album in retrospect. Compared to Saturdays = Youth, it's great.

And I don't know, I might actually like the new one. I haven't really listened to the whole thing yet, but the songs I've heard sound like an improvement/return to form more than a continuation of where they've been headed.

Still I don't think anything they do will ever come close to Dead Cities.

I think No. 10 Upping still holds up pretty well. If memory serves, the original vinyl pressing is different from what was released on CD...I seem to remember finding the CD version of "Hollywood Blvd" to be lifeless. I also dig Megatop Phoenix in its entirety. After that, "The Globe" was a decent single, but not much else left in the tank.
