abundatrade looks like a pretty cool site.

Spent too much time on there just checking out estimates. To wit:

Lou Reed The Blue Mask - $0.05

Pavement Terror Twilight - $0.23

Mary Lou's Corvette Blood on the Tracks - $2.65

Andy Prieboy Upon My Wicked Son - $14.65

Wasn't too bad. I hadn't remembered I let a few friends go through and take whatever so the 5 boxes were down to 3 and most of the best stuff gone. Still ended up getting about $400 in store credit so not so bad for hauling a bunch of boxes I was just watching collect dust out to the shop. Didn't spend it all because I wasn't really planning on having that much and didn't just wanna be rash and start grabbing random things. Did grab a couple things I knew I wanted, but will have some good shopping in the near future. Maybe next time I go to grab stuff I'll also remember to bring the pile of box sets I left behind on this trip.

I'm listening to CDs less and less and would really like the extra space and not having to move the suckers, but I don't know if I can bring myself to do it. Maybe I should make a goal of selling off 200 or 300 of them, and trade for vinyl.

When I realized I hadn't even though of opening those boxes for over a year and hadn't really gone down and pulled anything out in over 2, I was able to convince myself pretty easily, especially considering I have the vast majority of them backed up in FLAC on an external drive if I suddenly decide I MUST have CDs again. But I can understand the reluctance. If anyone suggested I get rid of the even less practical vinyl stacks I'd probably smack them.

By the way, here's most of what I got. A few of these either replaced CD versions or trashed copies. I can't remember them all, but I think this is most of 'em:

El Rego et Ses Commandos
Alternative Funk : Folie Distinguée
J. Mascics: Several Shades of Why
James Brown: Soul on Top
Raveonettes: In and Out of Control
Little Anthony & the Impreials: S/T
Jimmy Smith: The Sermon
Billie Holiday: Recital
White Stripes: De Stijl
AFCGT: S/T
James Blake: S/T
Amy Winehouse: Back in Black
Nicolas Jaar: Space is Only Noise
Los Lobos: And a Time to Dance
Washed Out: Within and Without
Galaxie 500: This is Our Music
Klark Kent: S/T
Kraftwerk: Computer World
Stan Ridgeway: The Big Heat
DJ Spooky: Riddim Warfare
Sonic Youth Bad Moon Rising

A couple others that I forget off hand, but I am certainly enjoying this little haul. Biggest single record shopping day, especially in terms of shiny new vinyl, that I've had for a long time, probably 3-4 years.

Did you trade in any of the cd's you have for vinyl versions of the same album?

Yeah, The Raveonettes I had on CD and the White Stripes. And yes, the vinyl cost much more than I got for each of those discs. This wan't done for costs savings though, just getting out of the CD thing. I lost some others I'll eventually replace on vinyl as well.

I could be like my smarmy non-music-geek friends and ask, "Did you buy some 8-track tapes and Edison cylinders too?"

Ok, so most of them have never even heard of an Edison cylinder, but they make it clear the whole vinyl thing is lost on them.

No, but I have been considering dragging out and hooking up an old reel to reel machine to make some extra-long mixes to play when I have a party or something so I don't have to change things up throughout the evening. Biggest problem I've got there is needing another tape loop on my preamp as I've already got a regular tape deck and a CD recorder taking up the two tape looks I've got and I really haven't run across a cheap (or any really) preamp with 3 tape loops.

I've got to admit it's pretty lost on me too. I know there's an audiophile argument that can be made but it goes against the grain of downsizing storage space and increasing portability that is supposedly the motivation for getting rid of the cds. I could see having vinyl to go buy things that never came out on CD or are extremely hard to find but personally I would never sell my cds and then buy the same releases in vinyl versions.

we used to make 6 hour mixes on VHS tapes for parties back in the mid 90's. Maybe you could do the same thing with DVD-rs?

Could be a possibility. Of course, then I would need to hook my computer or a DVD player to the stereo, which would require my unplugging something else. This all reminds me. I hate modern preamps with their measly 3-4 hook ups and no phono stages. I've got two turntables, a tape deck, a CD recorder, a bluetooth receiver and a tuner in mine and I'm all full. No way I could use any preamp I've seen around new for anywhere close to an affordable price.

Maybe he has a lot of vertical space but less horizontal space? ;-)

I don't get too into the audiophile arguments about vinyl vs. CD. I just enjoy playing records more. I never really developed the same attachment to CDs for whatever reason and have tended to just play records or first play the iPod and now stream stuff and the CDs ended up boxed away for a few years and I didn't miss them so there was no point in hanging on to them. It wasn't a big decision based on anything in particular, just kind of what happened and how it played out for me. I will say part of the fun is probably when someone comes over and we sit around playing records there is a definite increase in the engagement they have with wanting to sit around and play music. Could be the nostalgia factor, not sure, but group listening on vinyl always seems to get people a lot more interested than playing CDs or digital files. But I do find the whole experience more engaging.

Yeah, mine's pretty full up, too. Got the computer playing thru the stereo, along with the CD and DVD player. Would love to hook up my TT as well, but it's a little too shaky there and starts to feed back. Should get some feet or something for it, because I've got a huge stack of promo 45s I've garnered over the years I've never even heard. :nono:

And don't get me started on hooking the cassette and MiniDisc players back up!

i have about 10 milk cartons full of CDs under the basement stairs. almost sold them for an itouch. have them all backed up to high-quality VBR MP3. One of these days (while they're still worth something) i'll sell 'em too, but it'll be painful.

but i still have 3 copies of the wrens "seacaucus"... i was selling them at $80-a-pop and then the reissue came out... would still make a profit at $7/each, but i'm too lazy.
