Riley Puckett: Red Sails in the Sunset

If you like some old time shit, check this out. These are pop country recordings Puckett did as a solo artist in 39-41. This actually represents his later work as he was recording since the early 20s and playing before that. (He was born in 1894.) Blind since birth thanks to an accident during the delivery, Puckett made his name at the Georgia Old-Time Fiddlers Conventions where newspaper reporters covering these events referred to him as the "Bald Mountain Caruso."

Man, I haven't listened to Relationship of Command in years. Gotta fix that.

Computer Soup & Jan Jelinek: Improvisations And Edits Tokyo, 09/26/2001

A few other Jan Jelinek releases hint at a jazz influence to his glitchy, minimalist electronic excursions, but this disc with Computer Soup is the one that makes it obvious. On other releases, these influences come by way of bits of sound captured off vintage jazz albums but then so processed and played with as to be unrecognizable. On this release, the collaboration blends melodic horns drifting in and out of the mix and blending with the electronics. I've enjoyed a lot of his stuff, but this one is my favorite and the one I keep coming back to.

One Shot- French hommes doing a kind of a Brand X/Mahavishnu kind of thing.

John Lydon's Psycho's Path.
Quote:
For his first solo album, John Lydon decided to tentatively explore electronica without leaving behind the guitar growl that made the Sex Pistols' 1996 reunion a success. The guitars are woven into the electronic dance beats throughout Psycho's Path, which occasionally results in some exciting juxtapositions. However, it too often sounds like Lydon doesn't know how to follow through on his ideas; at worst, he sounds as if he's grasping for the ideas himself. Even with its faults, Psycho's Path sounds more alive and ambitious than the last handful of Public Image Limited albums, and certainly more vital than the Sex Pistols reunion, so it is a respectable comeback of sorts.

Oddly enough, I've tried to make a copy of this disc and it's longer than 80 minutes. How does THAT work?

The Field - Looping State of Mind

Bought this at the very end of the year but didn't really listen to it before I compiled my favorites of 2011 list. More of the same from The Field, but with the addition of fleeting, whispery vocals in some songs. Both this and Asap Rocky probably had a decent shot of making my top 20 if I had listened to them more in time.

Quote:
Meic Stevens may not be a familiar name in much of the world, but in his native Wales the singer-songwriter's stature is often compared to that of Bob Dylan. A local legend whose psych-folk influence can be heard in such contemporary Welsh groups as Super Furry Animals and Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Stevens also founded his country's first independent record company, the estimable Sain label.

Stevens sang mostly in his native language, a political act not unlike speaking Basque in Spain or Cherokee in the U.S. His one English-language album is 1970'sOutlander, an outstanding marriage of musicianship and eclecticism. Arising from the same fertile soil as the work of the late-'60s icons, Stevens's album nonetheless manages to avoid easy comparisons. Its jazz-Indo-psych ragas merge seamlessly with its acid folksongs and Dylan-esque meditations on relationships and politics. Performed by a remarkable cast of musicians hand-picked by English rock tastemaker Ian Samwell, Outlander was created with a minimum of rehearsal and consists largely of first takes.

Greeted with critical acclaim upon Outlander's U.K. release, Stevens traveled Stateside for a two-week tour in the summer of 1970. But the album never crossed the Atlantic; its very first U.S. release is this expanded, remastered Rhino Handmade issue. Copies of the LP have fetched upwards of $500 on the collectors' market, a testimony to the enduring quality of its songs. Now, fans can enjoy the original album in its entirety, along with nine bonus tracks, including outtakes, alternate versions, and the 1970 B-side "Blue Sleep."

Lunacy Diaries. Volume 1

Compilation put together by Netlabel GV Sound. GV Sound "specializes in non-commercial web edition releases mainly of musical styles as Noise, Dark Ambient, Ambient, Drone. All releases of the label are distributed free under license from Creative Commons." It's pretty much all gathered up from Russia, Ukraine and other former eastern block countries. Really interesting stuff and a rabbit hole that appears quite endless. Gonna try not to fall too far in.
