I was tired of my wife subjecting my 8 year old son to top 40, since he has recently been reciting and singing some pretty horrific tunes. I gave him my mp3 player, preloaded with a bunch of my favorite music. I had previously asked him if he wanted an mp3 player and he was so non-nonchalant about it that I didn't bother pushing it on him. When I asked him last weekend he simply said yes, so I jumped on the chance before the stubborn chap had a chance to change his mind. I had to go through and delete a bunch of stuff due to language, and ended up deleting more than I thought I would. :(

So far his favorite artists are: Scott Miller, Soul Coughing, The Eels, AC/DC, and he loves Guns 'n' Roses' Sweet Child O' Mine. He's even started a notebook of his favorites, lol.

I am so proud.

nicely done, teej

whenever i have my kids, i put on obner-approved music in the car to make sure they don't get warped by all the black-eyed peas their mom subjects them to on a regular basis

well done TJ. a little guidance never hurt.

Sebastian loves The Drums, and sings along to a few of their songs. Asks to put them on in the car all the time.

he does not like Slayer.

I'm not sure if mine like music in the sense that this board considers music.

I mean we play the shit out of "This Little Light of Mine" and "One Little Duckie." And they randomly bust out into "Rudolph" whether it's christmas or not. Also love the Wonder Pets theme song.

But rarely even try to listen to regular music around them because they look at me like I have had 4 heads.

2.3 yrs old, so we're still on Itsy Bitsy Spider. I can't wait though. We play stuff at home a lot but who knows what she likes.

We do have a mix of kid-themed stuff, some cd's and some vinyl people gave us. It's me that generally can't stomach those, I'm sure she'd like them.

At 8 and 5 either is up for something energetic. I get the "uggh" requests time and again but for the most part they have always taken a shine to a lot of stuff I play from any genre which is cool. I have made comps for each of them by their requests and choosing of songs all fairly palatable, but I admit I steer'em away from some lousy ones , "no really, you don't wanna hear that again, ever." And even so, gotta be careful what you choose because that Len Price 3 has been off the dock for 1 year since they overplayed it. That's why I do comps now. They can kill songs but not albums anymore, no fuckin way, not now.

Last night my oldest (12) put on Fatboy Slim and just started smiling -- one of those uncontrollable smiles, where you can't help yourself. Then he started moving.
"Doesn't this just make you want to dance?!?!"

Dude knows what's up.

I caught my 8 year old playing air drums the other day. He was keeping a pretty good beat.

My 9-year-old just discovered Quiet Riot ("Cum on Feel the Noize") and thinks it's the greatest thing he's ever heard. I'm currently being subjected to repeated listens of it as per his demand.

Damn you, DuBrow!

fucking dubrow.

jesus. this reminded me of my 25 minute trolling college radio interview of dubrow when he was playing with his quiet riot reincarnation at a nearby liquor store circa 2001. i have to find that fucking tape. the questions revolved around his hair plugs, how the songs on his new cd were rip-offs of old favorites, his ex-wives, etc. i thought he would hang up after the first five minutes, but like i said, he stayed put for 25 minutes of antagonism. gotta give him credit.

i distinctly recall asking, as a final question, how his drummer only played with one arm.
"that's def leppard, dude"
..and he hung up.

this was the same summer I interviewed "screech" from saved by the bell via telephone with his band called "salty the pocket knife". just a hi and goodbye interview; and i never did listen to his cd.

Play him the Oasis cover of the cover.

Or slip in the Slade original. It's close enough that he might not even hear the difference, but the path it might send him on is far different than the Quiet Riot trajectory.
