My 9-year-old just discovered Quiet Riot ("Cum on Feel the Noize") and thinks it's the greatest thing he's ever heard. I'm currently being subjected to repeated listens of it as per his demand.

Damn you, DuBrow!

Play him the Oasis cover of the cover.

Or slip in the Slade original. It's close enough that he might not even hear the difference, but the path it might send him on is far different than the Quiet Riot trajectory.

good call

Let's see: child from Texas, listening to Quiet Riot -- it won't be instantaneous, but eventually, it's going to get him to Pantera.

Listens to Slade -- he'll get to And Thou Shalt Know Us by the Carnage in Our Wake.

Listens to Oasis -- it'll be At the Drive-in.

There is something kinda crappy about old fucks like you lot 'suggesting' listening to their kids.

My dad was 'into' music but when I was a kid he made it quite clear if I ever touched any of his records he'd beat the shit out of me. He meant it to.

As a result I never heard the Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Kraftwerk etc until much later, and still haven't and probably will never set ears on Tangerine Dream, Joan Armatrading or Alan Parson Project. Since my dad was basically a hippy (albeit not peace loving, more of the 'kick your cunt in' variety) I got into punk, just to get it right up him and say 'hey dad, fuck your 60's and fuck your hippy shite!'.

Because you see that's an essential part of it all. Anger, resentment, generational divide, individualism, rebellion against authority.

The death of rock n' roll was when parent and child started liking the same sort of stuff.

I can get behind that statement. At least give your kid a chance at developing some taste.

I'm not worried about "suggesting" music. My goal here is to open his ears to something outside of the top 40 that his mother subjects them to in the car. The mp3 player is full of 16 gigs worth of a wide variety of punk, metal, pop, classic, indie, emo, alternative, and 80's rock. He can like whatever he wants to.

Fu, I'd bet your dad's "don't touch my records" was more based on the idea that he didn't want you breaking, scratching, or losing them over him not wanting you to hear dirty or suggestive lyrics.

He spent the remainder of this past weekend alternating the aforementioned Quiet Riot track with what has suddenly become his second-favorite song of all time, "We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister.

So, basically, his musical tastes at 9 mirror those of mine at 17.

funny you should mention them, as it did occur to me that "round and round" is probably next on his list

and, it goes without saying that ratt was my favorite of those '80s hair bands

Or you could always just get him a copy of Billy Squier's Don't Say No, a Camaro and a bag of weed.

I had an '81 Z-28 (with T-TOPS!) back in '84, on which I routinely blasted Don't Say No. Was too big of a wuss to include the weed, though.

With munchies, you would have fattened up that much sooner, so good on not smoking, Bobbo.

Also: did Dizzee Rascal make the world -- or, at least, hip-hop -- safe for Billy Squier? Inquiring minds want to know.

I will just assume feathered hair and a members only jacket to complete that image.

If you haven't by now, you should probably go look for Heavy Metal parking Lot. You may have been in that movie.
