Someday, other individuals besides myself and Patrick Bateman will appreciate Genesis' Eighties material.

I just want to point out that Chuckles posted not only some weird ass Lou Reed album I've never heard of with Robocop on the cover, but the fucking LONEWOLF MCQUADE SOUNTRACK.

The fracking of that oil shale up there has put something weird in the water hasn't it?

Since I already took Lou's side in the Reed/Cale thread, I'll go ahead and say that Lou Reed album is actually quite good It's Legendary Hearts, the follow-up to Blue Mask. Blue Mask was the critical darling and Legendary Hearts the too similar follow-up, but I personally prefer it The Last Shot is one of my favorite solo Lou Reed songs.

a couple years ago, i made a ringtone out of phil collins' insane laugh from "mama" - it was too disturbing to ever actually use, though

Hated 80's Genesis. Still do.
It was EVERYWHERE. Couldn't get away from it.

Suffers from a bit too slick production, and definitely has flags waving "It's the 80's", but there's some strong, edgy, snarly-ass songs lurking in here.

Most-played Simon album for me.

Well constructed, perfectly sequenced album. And yes, Merle out-sings Willie from the get-go.

+1:
R.E.M.
Minutemen
ESG
The Replacements (not generally a fan but I like Hootenany)
New Order
Talking Heads
Wipers
U2

and +.5 (these are pretty good, but not really favorites):
Violent Femmes
X
Aztec Camera
Echo & the Bunnymen
XTC

And as much as love Swans later stuff, I think Filth sucks. I even love some albums that are stylistically similar from around this same time. I just think Swans sucked at first.

And hey: '80s Genesis is no worse than '70s Genesis

I'll add:

Image
Daniel Johnston - Yip/Jump Music
Before he went nuts. When he was just kind of crazy, a slightly disturbed outcast. I can't really take his later stuff, but this stuff is raw brilliance. It's sad but optimistic, naive but insightful.

Pylon - Chomp
I think I may like this more than Gyrate. It's catchier and the songs feel more refined, but it still has the same post-punk edge. The song "Crazy" that R.E.M. covered is on this album.

Image
Brian Eno - Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks
Instrumental Eno album that isn't exactly ambient. Contains the beautiful "Deep Blue Day".

Sonic Youth - Confusion Is Sex
Raw, ragged, ugly early SY album that I don't listen to a lot, but that I love. Maybe their most "No Wave" album.

Shonen Knife - Burning Farm
Endlessly charming and fun, amateurish debut. My favorite Shonen Knife album, probably.

"Worried Shoes", "The Creature", and "Speeding Motorcycle" are all classic songs. I love this record, too.

Like fellow Beantowners Mission Of Burma, The Proletariat rams blistering guitar noise through the heart of a punk attack. The Proles cut it closer to the vest than MOB, though, with more sheer speed and a militant political stance.

SOMA HOLIDAY’s anthemic artpunk shows more of the single-minded intensity of Jimmy Carter-era political punk than the indescriminate mania of reaganophony. Limited and severely constricted but, like The Jam, fierce on it’s own terms.
