Mark Lanegan Band: Blues Funeral

Just getting a first listen to this thing by the guy from Screaming Trees and digging it so far. The title is right on, dirgey blues sounds, albeit lightened with many synth touches that keep it from being more of the same ol' same ol' and which take over some tracks. I can see myself listening to this one a lot this year.

ASC: TMA-1 EP

Moody drum & bass that flirts with ambient moods from time to time. Really good stuff and at times somewhat reminiscent of the first Burial album.

Digital Leather: Sponge

Fuzzed out, lo-fi, synth-inflected, garage rock. Yeah, I'd say that covers it. This is a cassette with some rough takes that I believe will be getting a fuller release on Fat Possum eventually. Hope so. I'll grab it. Seems they used to be managed by Jay Reatard and already have a few albums out that I've missed and may need to go back and look into.

I've only heard Sorcerer and Warm Brother but those were much better than this.

Raveonettes: In and Out of Control

I like pretty much everything these guys have put out, although last year's Raven in the Grave was their weakest for me. This one from the year before was stronger. A great melding of the various sides of this group with a catchy sheen laid over top without leaving the guitar feedback totally out of the picture. I think these guys are really a great example of a band that is able to stretch and progress without losing their inherent character. Every one of their records sounds quite different, yet every one of their records sounds exactly like them.
