These were the two bands we constantly debated back in High school. Replacements were like the Stones, R.E.M. were like the Beatles.

I like how both photos have essentially the same theme.

love the first few REM albums and a handful of their later songs, but The Replacements pretty easily for me.

I like how Michael Stipe signed the R.E.M. photo with just "Michael."

R.E.M. - the band that introduced me to non-Top 40 music at a very early age. Replacements - never been a fan

Agreed. These two also happen to be two of the top ten or so artists to which I have devoted the most listening time. Each band's first five albums are stellar (in addition to the early EPs), but if I had to choose one, it'd be the Mats.

REM was a remarkably consistent band, disciplined and workman-like, built to last and to plug along, improving in increments. A perennial B student.

The Replacements were lightning in a bottle, mercurial and maddeningly inconsistent, self-destructive and touched with the spark of genius. The A+ student that fails the class.

If you're a fan of rock 'n' roll, there's really no contest.

In order:
• Tim -- The production is a little clean, but that only brings out the hooks in what are their best songs, period.
• Let It Be -- The "classic". Although, like most early 'Mats records, it's a little bit uneven, which puts it as not quite the best place to start. Still, essential.
• Pleased to Meet Me -- A couple of clunker tunes, but mostly great. "Alex Chilton", "Valentine", and "Can't Hardly Wait" should kick your ass.
• Hootenanny -- Extremely uneven, but that is part of the charm here.
• All Shook Down -- Their last album and one of their best. That said, I place it down here, because it's more a Westerberg solo album than a true Replacements album.
• Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out the Trash -- Sounds exactly how you would expect an album with this title to sound. Trashy, thrashy, and drunk. Also, a helluva lot of fun.

I think you could start with any of the big three: Let It Be, Tim, and Pleased to Meet Me and get a very good representation of them. The earlier stuff (Sorry Ma and Stink) is more punk-based and the last two albums are much more polished and have less of an edge. My personal favorite is PTMM.

This one really is too close to call for me. I picked REM because I think their first few albums were groundbreaking and incredibly important in the evolution of American underground/college radio music/alternative, whatever you wanna call it. They sounded utterly unique and dug out a new path for many others to follow. I think they are perhaps unfairly tainted by some less than interesting later albums. I still like The Replacements a ton and still listen to Let It Be fairly regularly, but for me they always seem to garner just a sliver more adoration than deserved for their output. I somehow always get the idea people are more in love with the idea of The Replacements than the actual records.

What are the clunkers on Pleased to Meet Me? Did you leave out Don't Tell A Soul on purpose? I'd put that right below Pleased to Meet Me.

As far as the original question goes, I like Tim more than any REM album but like Murmur and Reckoning more than any other Replacements album. REM has more quality material as a result of their longevity but also a lot more clunkers too. Not really sure the point of these matches to begin with but I guess gun to the head, I'd go with Replacements.

"The Ledge" and "Nightclub Jitters"
Both sound really stilted and forced to me and they're right next to each other in sequence.

Yeah, I did. I think that it's their weakest album. Not a bad album, mind you -- there are a couple of songs that I love -- it's just their weakest and not a good place to start. (IMO)

The Replacements by the distance between Athens, Georgia and Athens, Greece (approx. 5,600 miles fact fans).

Tommy Womack said it best.

Quote:
The Replacements played rock and roll, they were the last of a dying breed
Damn the torpedoes! types, they could really let it bleed
They weren't afraid of anything or anybody, like skinny little dogs in a cage
They'd get drunker than you've gotten in your entire life
Have another drink on top of that one and walk right out onto the stage
I first went to see 'em 'cause Jeff Sweeney said I should
It was Cantrell's in January and they weren't any good
The lead guitarist was naked, they'd all had too much beer
They had Marshalls turned up to 10 which ordinarily wouldn't be such a bad thing
But they were trying to tune up by ear
So I gave 'em another chance, at the shed opening for Petty, what could go wrong
Well this time they were wearing dresses drinking whiskey and never finished a song
So now I'm angry 'cause money don't grow on trees, standing out there in the parking lot
With tickets for the next night already in my hands thinking to myself, Jeez
What am I gonna do with these?
So I went, largely to say I was there
Drove home white-knuckle, straitjacket, dumbass blind
They were the greatest rock and roll band I ever did hear!
Had to look twice to make sure it was the same guys! An astonishing transformation
From pupa to butterfly, Saul to Paul, Cougar to Mellencamp
Like crawling inside of Exile on Main St. and pulling Never Mind the Bullocks
Up to your chin like a sonic quilt
They were nice guys and they were dicks, you wouldn't know what they'd do
One show might run 31 songs and alter your perspective
And the next might fall apart before it got to #2
But folks came out to see 'em, if only to say they saw 'em before they were dead
And others to see if they could be anywhere near as good or as bad as everybody else said
They snorted lines and lost their minds and notched their guns all over the sphere
Got to where they couldn't tell you what day it was, what month it was
They couldn't even zone in on a year
They puked in their hands and tossed it on the ceilings of dressing rooms on tour
And rock and roll journalists wrote it all down, truth? lies? they weren't sure
They burned every bridge they didn't blow sky high, then started pissing off each other too
It was brother against brother then, and not enough drugs to do
It all came crashing down 'cause it couldn't do much else
That way of life is a flaming star that grows real big and red and giant
Then falls in on top of itself
Chris, he's a painter now, solo artist, he's cool
Slim Dunlop is proof of the evidence of God, a guitar genius, a role-model
A credit to the gene pool!
Tommy moved to California to work for Axl Rose
I think he should team up with Slash and form Slash and Pop, they'd rock the house
They'd sell tickets, it'd be the most
Paul is in the basement, writing ballads, drinking O-Doul's
Bob is up in Heaven shooting speed and smoking Kools
The Replacements played rock and roll they were the last of a dying breed
Pernicious damn the torpedoes types, they could make you sweat, make you holler
They knew Only Women Bleed!
They were Charles Bukowski with watts and vomit, you paid and you took your chance
'Cause when they were good, God got up to dance!
You ever seen God dance? He'll show you a step or two, Michael Flatley!
