Shiv, I be liking that Kracken. I like to put two (++) shots and a half a lime in a shaker, throw in a little maraschino liqueur and shake it up like a martini, strain it into a cocktail coupe, and splash a little club soda (made with the handy-dandy sodastream). Shit is goog.

Nothing special. St. Paul brewery with a solid malty session brew.

I bought a bottle of Pernod last weekend. I love the stuff straight up, for now. Any suggestions of some decent mixers? Every published drink I've encountered is ultimately a dilution with fruit juice/liqueur.

Didn't get to picking up any the recommended rums due to a recent run of dead babies. I wish I was joking.
But I'm gonna get three bottles o' rum next weekend...Thanks for the recs.

As a rule for myself, carbernet and merlot are only to be consumed at meals because I've covered too many bathroom walls via forceful splash-back after consuming either exclusively for a few hours on an empty stomach. They are a couple of bad news brothers.

Will always remind me of the movie "Gotcha"

Waiter: Avec de l'eau?
Jonathan: A VICTOR WHO?
Waiter: VIS VAHTER?!
Jonathan: PLEASE!

So, I drink it with water. Good digestif.

I just looked this movie up. It looks amazing.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089222/

Quote:
Jonathan plays a game called Gotcha in which he hunts and is hunted by other students with paint guns. After a big win, he goes off for a vacation in France where he meets the sexy Sasha who says she is only interested in him because he is a virgin. She takes him with her to East Germany where they are separated and he has to escape back to the west on his own, all the while being trailed by East German spies. He arrives home only to find the game is still going on, and a canister of film is in his backpack. Then Sasha re-appears.

OK. Anything you say. We write it down. Then we'll make a movie.

I added a dram of orange blossom water to a three finger cocktail glass of Pernod and filled it with water. Seems to work pretty well, i.e., you should try that because i had an idea that it would be pretty good and it really was.

That movie is a Cold War classic. I'll try your recipe and report back.

Holy shit Gotcha was as ridiculous as expected, but not unentertaining. Probably worthy of a MST3K skewering.

I thought I hated rum after multiple disastrous bottle sessions of Captain Morgan in undergrad. Then I found this:

I know there are better, but this stuff hits the spot for a quite reasonable price.
Jamaican me so molassissy sassy slop ploppy drunk.

Appleton is good.

You might want to try Barbancourt for a different experience as well. They age them in oak which adds a little of that bourbon flavor but still with the molasses hang in it. AN added 8 proof i always referred to as the voodoo extra.

Image

Mount Gay is a good golden go to down here, which are perfect for Rum & Tonics a regular asked for cocktail.

But, you may also want to try Goslings[sure you've heard it], which is a dark rum very molassesy often served with ginger beer [dark&stormy] and that is how they market it to the states.

Lots of rums out there to try. I would stay away from anything spiked or spiced if you know what I mean. Stick to nature.

The Mount Gay and tonic is a solid drink. I never had that combo before but I think it's smoother and overall a better combination than gin. The Barbancourt I haven't quite warmed up to yet. Simply tasted it straight up and mixed a short one with some Coke. The elevated alcohol content doesn't make it great for drinking straight; and I preferred the Appleton Estate for the Coke mixer. Any other recs for Barbancourt drinks to make it shine?

Good rum + club soda + lime was always my go to drink back in the day. Tonic fucks up the taste of rum IMHO.

You're probably right, but as far as tonic goes, the white rum combo with a squirt of lime is pretty good.

I would just add double the Barbancourt, no white rum

RUM Runner

A ton of Ingredients:

* Two cups ice
* 1 oz pineapple juice
* 1 oz orange juice
* 1 oz blackberry liqueur
* 1 oz banana liqueur
* 1 oz light rum
* 1 oz dark rum or aged rum
* Splash grenadine
* Optional: one ounce of Bacardi 151 to float on top
* Orange slice (optional)

To make by the gallon use 24oz of each

or

Hemingway Daiquiri (Original) [IMO the golden rum goes better with the grapefruit juice]
2 oz Rum
Juice of 2 Limes (small limes)
Juice of 1/2 Grapefruit
1/4 oz Maraschino Liqueur
1/4 oz Cane Syrup

Build all ingredients over crushed ice in a cocktail shaker. Give it a quick, sharp shake or two and pour into the Collins glass. Garnish with part of a spent lime shell.

Also, Pink Grapefruit juice with rum is pretty good and simple

I was reading this thread for the first time in a while and saw GAR posted about Kracken spiced rum and was thinking of making a Dark & Stormy. However, I'm out of limes and don't feel like going to Kroger. So, I'm probably going with this:

Excellent call, Jerkass.

Try laying off the lime and adding a pinch of nutmeg in one. Used to drink at a bar that did that, always thought it was a nice addition.
