That zilch on the right could play every instrument in a marching band by himself at the same time and it still not be as impressive as Whitney's voice at the height of its powers. Girl could sang

Also, whether you like it or not: If you compile sales records like these more people are going to care when you die. If you live a zero, you will die a zero.

I think they are both equally praiseworthy/noteworthy - which is to say not at all. Belch x 1 mil - and my pops was in Iraq the year she sang Teh Besk Starb Banbgbled Bammger Evar. It's so - MEANINGFuL - oh wait no it's not. Another dumb ass who through it all away for some rocks and a big dong. Good job.

It has always been my plan to drown in a bathtub after a combination of alcohol and anxiolytics; Now this route will be forever linked to Whitney Houston.

Onto Plan #2.

I love Quorthon, and I don't think Bathory gets enough credit even among metal circles sometimes. It's a pretty weird comparison, though, and it brings up an interesting point:

I don't think there's anything necessarily less honorable about respecting/appreciating someone for their physical talent (ie Whitney's voice) vs respecting an intellectual talent (ie Quorthon's creativity). I don't like Whitney Houston at all, but it's hard to argue that she didn't have an amazing voice. That's why people gave a shit about her even though she was a batshit crazy crack addict. I don't think anyone would claim she was some kind of musical messiah, or really influential in any way. She was a trainwreck with a great voice, and people like watching that stuff.

I dunno, I was half watching Tommy Mottola and Simon Cowell discuss her last night and their point regarding her influence was basically that, pop music is dominated by female singers right now, be it Adele, Rihanna, Beyonce or whoever (not to mention, your Mariah's and Xtina's) and they all cite Whitney as a major influence. Cowell also pointed out that most female singers who think they are the shit always want to sing Whitney in an audition because she is the gold standard.

Sure it's not a bunch of mopes with Testament back patches on their jean jackets rolling around in the mud in a field somewhere, but you have to admit, pretty fucking influential.

avclub.com sums up my opinion on this matter. You're not looking at it with the right perspective if you think people are overstating the impact of her death.

It's meaningful in that Whitney has been the only one able to do a great rendition of the song, & as such is proof that all singers & sports leagues need to follow the lead of Elvis & refuse to dishonor America with endless shitty versions of the song. KNOW YOUR RANGE. &, like Elvis, make "America the Beautiful" the go-to.

*Meanwhile, Mitt Rmoney needs to stop even that. The man could butcher "The Wheels on the Bus", let alone a patriotic anthem.
