I feel that Gizelle Smith should be nationally popular and that she has recorded one of the best recent pop albums:

Psalm One was unfortunately overshadowed by that godawful BRAND NEW DICK song with rhymesayers and kanye who also is so bad.

Jean Grae is still pretty good

lots of people who didn't even know who MC Lyte was tonight at the grammy's. That's unacceptable.

Same here. I don't know that she's ever done a headline tour. I know she did a run with No Doubt and Of Montreal

I kinda think Janelle Monae was the Mitt Romney of music. She had such crossover appeal everyone assumed she'd be huge, but really neither the indie/hipster crowd or the real r&b fans really ever loved her, she just mildly appealed to both. She's young as hell and talented though so maybe down the road she'll still eventually connect, but I just don't think she really found a solid audience on either side of the fence she straddled this time around, despite some serious PR machine push.

Her Bible Belt record apparently peaked at #87 on the Billboard top 200, but I guess I expected she'd get bigger. Maybe she needs to get on SNL while Sarah Palin is visiting.

I was trying to remember Little Jackie's name, I love three songs from that album.

I had completely forgotten about her until Radcliffe's mention. I remember listening to that album quite a lot.

Jean Grae should be bigger than she is, but I doubt she'll ever be "popular"

this.

the VV Brown thing astounds me. there are a lot of new artists that try to mimic her voice. and her songs are sooo much better (even the pop diva ones).

I listened to that Lissie album because I really liked "Stranger" (I'm a sucker for anything Phil Spector-ish). All the other songs were bland.

Jenny Lewis.
Brilliant songwriter. Great voice.
Hot.

How is she not a household name?
